Tony Bloom etc

Swansea City have announced a partnership with data specialists Jamestown Analytics which they say will strengthen the club's work in the transfer market.

Jamestown Analytics is owned by Tony Bloom (pictured above), the owner of Premier League Brighton and Hove Albion – who have been lauded for their recruitment work in recent years - and a part-owner of Scottish side Heart of Midlothian.

The company has also worked with the likes of Como and Union Saint Gilloise, with Swansea claiming their new agreement will see them given "access to world-leading, industry-renowned expertise" which will increase efficiency in their "player trading model".

Swansea have not revealed the financial details of the Jamestown Analytics deal.

"This partnership is a real coup for the club," chief executive Tom Gorringe told Swansea's website.

"Jamestown are widely regarded as leaders in data-led player recruitment, and we have seen the success that many of their partner clubs have achieved over recent times. Jamestown only works with an exclusive list of clubs and we are honoured to now join that group."

Swansea appointed Ben Stevens as their new sporting director last week.

On Monday, they announced that Jay Lefevre had been promoted to a head of recruitment role under Stevens, having joined Swansea from Celtic in December 2025 as chief scout.

This is not me being critical. I really rate Widell and Walta. I see lots to like in Stamenic, I just don't think he's what we need in the position that we play him in. I'm just saying that not all of them have been universally popular. For example, a lot of people had already written Walta off prior to the last couple of games.

As a club we're in a really interesting position. We've got a capable squad with one or two areas needing improvement. We're likely to lose one or two of last season's big hitters, but given this announcement that might just free up funds to bring in better.

It's probably not going to be an easy division next season. Some strong clubs have come down. We're in with as good a chance as most of making the playoffs, but we can't afford many mistakes. This is a good step in the right direction.

Players rarely get universal praise from fans. Vipotnik divided opinion until very recently and he’s probably going to be sold for upwards of 15 million.

I never understood the stick Vipi got. There was obvious ability there that Luke Williams showed very little interest or ability in maximising.

I think this is an interesting development. Probably unnerving for the existimg analysts in situ. Not sure how big that team is but must be surplus to requirements now?
Next season is going to be a tough one but hopefully this latest link up will give us some ammunition.

I see the partnership as an improvement not a replacement for our analistic/recruitment team. The two new personnel changes/appointments Ben Stevens and Jay Lefevre have specialised in recruitment and data analysis. I can see Jamestown providing the data and jointly working with our team, the same as the previous data provider.

Lefevres experience appears to be solely in scouting operations so don’t think he will have much of a data background.

Ben Stevens more rounded but doesn’t look like he has a huge amount of recruitment experience, most of it probably coming from his recent assistant role.

I think this deal will essentially act as a recruitment department in a box to replace the team we just lost. One just went to Cardiff although can’t say I had heard of him.

Says Jay Lefevre is a scout there in your link, don’t see data as part of his background.
Dougie Freedman does the recruitment at Palace like it says in your link, Stevens was his assistant.

Writing on LinkedIn, he described his role as “building, maintaining and managing all strategic processes whilst leading a group of scouts to identify players that align with the club’s recruitment model.”

Prior to Celtic, Lefevre worked for Arsenal as Head of Video Scouting and Analysis. He will start work at Swansea in December.

Yes scouting operations and prior to that a video scout. There is no data mentioned anywhere there at all, he’s a scout.

Analysis doesn’t mean data when it comes to scouting, it’s video analysis.

They are a data analytics firm hired by Swansea. If we had our own analytics then we wouldn’t be hiring a firm. Jay Lefevre was a video analyst, turned scout, turned now head of recruitment.

Presumably Jamestown will ask what are you looking for with age, fees .wages .contract status .strength weakness etc and possible a list of candidates with recommendations.

These recommendations would be minded to future sell on value. They may also provide a latest news for players suddenly becoming available. (Vipotnik for example )

Someone separate from this in the club would still have to make the final call. There could be an annul fee. It could also be a percentage of any deal in and out or a fixed fee for free transfers.

Everyone seems to be concentrating on the role Jamestown Analytics play in recruitment, but another key service they bring to the table is opposition team analysis. They only work with one team per league and this is where we could reap the benift throughout the season.

I would hope the new system identifies our underperformers as well as exciting new talent so we can evolve this squad into something more threatening next season - I can't see us mounting a serious challenge with players like Key, Ronald, Cooper, Fulton and Ward in the squad who are back ups and nothing more.

The partnership sounds like a great idea to me but we also have to bring players through from the academy more consistently and develop these as assets if we are going to improve our financial position. Aside of growing revenue through our celebrity minority owners or via selling our top players we need to bring more players through the system as this will add a valuable revenue stream. Parker is a prime example from last season who could turn into a valuable asset if he continues to improve, hopefully there a few other gems in there too that can be brought through next season.

I wonder if the stats of Fulton, Ronald and Key are better than you think and the reason why they get picked when fit.

Amuses me that people still can't grasp what Fulton does.

I do understand fully the value Fulton brings to the squad and as a back up player but my point is we need better in his position if we are to go up.

Stats only tell part of the story also..Ronald for instance will undoubtably have good stats for his workrate, safe passes backwards and dynamic sprints etc but can you honestly tell me he offers us a threat going forward and is capable of contributing to a promotion chasing team??

My eyes seem to be working fine but my head tells me we need a more dynamic winger if we are to challenge for promotion - the stats can look great but the reality is far different.

Personally I feel we need more pace in the team, preferably on the right for me. Again only my opinion but Ronald needs to play wing back in a 3 at the back team. I was hoping that Inoussa would have been better than he has been. But I can see why Ronald is picked as his tracking back is excellent, but is that what we want in a winger. Fulton is an excellent, experienced pro and squad member who does exactly what is required of him. Key has had a troublesome season, probably personal reasons but is an excellent championship full back, as seen in the last couple of games of the season. Burgess is an old fashioned stopper, but I would prefer an all round defender in there. Cooper was messed about last season, firstly by Wigan then by us. I stand by the club messed up and didn't realise he wasn't allowed to go on loan to another club. He needs a fresh start somewhere in league one. Again only my opinions.

Agree with all of that, especially about the lack of pace. In Inoussa's defence he was restricted by the way we reverted to playing under Sheehan and mostly injured during Matos' reign, but we will need to see more from him next season.

The only thing I will differ with is that for me it's been obvious that Cooper isn't good enough for where we want to be for a while now. Probably since the early days of Duff. If we've messed him around it's by not acknowledging that sooner and letting him go and put some roots down elsewhere instead of stringing him along here.

I am all for modernising the game and hope the success Brighton and Hearts had last season can be replicated at SCFC next season. I wouldn't want football to turn into the NFL however and would quite like to see a few mavericks who are more worried about beating the full back than damaging their stats - will these players even exist in 10 years time?

Maradona, Cruyff, Best, Pele etc would all have rubbish stats but were brilliant creative players that excited fans and made the game more entertaining. Would much rather watch this type of player than the 'robots' we get these days.
