| Land Tax Vs Council Tax 21:34 - Jun 25 with 4539 views | Dr_Winston | Much debate at the minute about Andy Burnham's proposed replacement of CT and stamp duty with a land value tax of around 0.48%. I will admit that despite being "on the right" and predisposed to dislike taxation in principle there's some interesting stuff here. I'll confess that its introduction would more than halve my own annual liability. The problem I still have with it is the assumption that people in valuable houses are automatically wealthy, which the explosion in property values in the last decade or so makes far from certain. It's entirely likely that some pensioner in a city like Bristol who bought their house 50 years ago will face a tax bill that they simply can't afford. It's a shame that the Conservatives so badly bodged the introduction of the Poll Tax, as a series of charges based around actual use of local services would be much fairer. A single person in a house valued at £500k would generally be a far smaller drain on council resources than a family of five in a house worth half that. Even now the fact that I only pay 25% less council tax than the family of four next door is a bit of an insult. | |

It would have been better, morbid I know, if a tree was planted for everyone who passed away as a memorial. In my opinion these saplings would be tendered, loved and nurtured. |
I love that idea. Feels a bit more like a charity than government thing though. Having said that in the government did bring it up, I’d be right behind it 👍

Why can’t we do both? They’re for different reasons. I disagree with Resolven on lots of things - not this though. There’s lots of talk on here about student politics. Bringing this up on many threads as an example of waste is very student politics.

Offices in the far east, solar panels for canoes, complete waste of Wales's money that could and should be used in Wales no matter the amount, Wales and the WELSH people should come FIRST after all its taxpayers money that they are using. And don't give a fig what the valley womble thinks or anyone else.

These are tiny amounts of money. We have to accept that no government will spend exactly as an individual wants. Without double (plus) accounting, which big sensed spends are you frustrated about?

For me its Cardiff Airport. Exeter airport a small regional airport in the South West is returning a profit. Is there a plan for Cardiff Airport or will it need to be subsidised for ever.

I like the idea of an airport in wales. If anyone can show the that it generates less money than its given id absolutely change my mind. If people’s thoughts are just based on what the sennedd gives it and not the positives, that’s ideological and I’m not interested. [Post edited 4 Jul 17:10]

My point is that there doesn't seem to be a plan to reduce losses. The Senedd have committed 10 years of funding without it being target loaded, you have to achieve targets to maintain the grants. Is there any other business in Wales who get Senedd grants without the need to hit targets. What happens after 10 years, there is no plan in place apart from the hope of increasing numbers. There was a report a couple of years saying that Cardiff Airport had no unique selling point and the Welsh infrastructure is holding the Airport back. Yes it is convenient for South West Wales, The Valleys and Cardiff, but Newport and East Wales it is easier to fly from Bristol. Bristol is looking to build a mono rail from Temple Meads to the airport, they are continually looking to improve. Cardiff Airport needs a better infrastructure if it wants to significantly increase numbers. Improve the road from the tunnels, this and the 50mph means it takes to long from east of the tunnels to get to the airport. Improve the off road transport link. Frequent direct non stop trains from Cardiff Central to Rhoose Station with shuttle busses. Direct busses from Cardiff Central through bus only lanes to the airport. Do something, have some sort of long term plan, not just throw money in for 10 years and hope numbers and losses improve. Rinse and repeat. [Post edited 4 Jul 18:35]

All i know is last year the figures showed it lost £7 per passenger per flight.
| Land Tax Vs Council Tax on 17:57 - Jul 5 with 579 views | Dr_Winston | The Senedd will fund a loss making airport for (not in) Cardiff ad infinitum because they fear a loss of prestige without one. The managers of the airport know this, so there's no incentive for them to improve. | |

As I said the grants should be dependant on achieving an agreed criteria, not a reward for failure. It must be the only business in Wales, because that is what it is, where senior management are under no pressure to be successful.
