Land Tax Vs Council Tax 21:34 - Jun 25 with 4544 viewsDr_Winston

Much debate at the minute about Andy Burnham's proposed replacement of CT and stamp duty with a land value tax of around 0.48%.

I will admit that despite being "on the right" and predisposed to dislike taxation in principle there's some interesting stuff here. I'll confess that its introduction would more than halve my own annual liability.

The problem I still have with it is the assumption that people in valuable houses are automatically wealthy, which the explosion in property values in the last decade or so makes far from certain. It's entirely likely that some pensioner in a city like Bristol who bought their house 50 years ago will face a tax bill that they simply can't afford.

It's a shame that the Conservatives so badly bodged the introduction of the Poll Tax, as a series of charges based around actual use of local services would be much fairer. A single person in a house valued at £500k would generally be a far smaller drain on council resources than a family of five in a house worth half that.

Even now the fact that I only pay 25% less council tax than the family of four next door is a bit of an insult.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Im not against it but I can't see how the figures stack up particularly in an area like parts of Wales with lower property values, would the government top the councils up. We also have a higher land tax in Wales to concider which should be abolished under the change. Or will the Senedd add another tax.

Not a quick implementation this one, at the end of the day mass taxation always looks a better solution to the Treasury.

To be honest I'm trying to give Plaid a chance, not my choice but hopefully things will slowly improve.

But how would our services be paid, Swansea which has lower property values would have less revenue raised. Im for it but I don't see how it would work.

It's a charity with booking benefits namely carbon offsetting.

Stop antagonising and attention seeking, you know nothing about me, so don't assume that I'm anglo minded because I'm far from it and his name was Ron Jones and the utter clown changed it, look it it up cause yet again you are wrong.

"The leader of Plaid Cymru, Rhun ap Iorwerth (formerly known as Ron Jones) has said he will rule out a referendum on removing Wales from the rest of the UK for a period of 5 years if he becomes First Minister of Wales"

Call yourself a Welshman, you're a clown which you prove time and time again.

He is Rhun. That is his name. You chose to disrespect him and use an English version of his name. That is what English do. That is what you do. You disrespect me.

You do not like me. I have nothing against you. i sure you are a decent fellow. I do not want to abuse anyone on here as you do not know their circumstances.

I have a go at you are you are promoting English Reform narratives going after valid ( and very minor ) charities. This is low class.

It's Jones on his birth certificate and that's a fact. His parents claim they had no choice.

Usual suspect as always going against the grain, 99% of Taxpayers don't want money to be continually wasted systematically by various useless governments, when services in Wales are desperate for funding.

Only an utter clown would be happy to see Taxpayers money wasted.

Those who pay little have little wasted, but want to increase the tax for others.

Forced to use Jones on the certificate by those treacherous, quisling Anglophile Rhondda registrars - they probably were sent to sit in the corner with a Welsh Not afterwards in shame...

A more plausible explanation seems his folks moved up North and got involved with the Welsh Nationalist movement of the 70s and this was the reason for altering the family names

Depends if you believe in climate change.

Actually no, that’s not right. It depends if you believe the world is currently becoming warmer for whatever reason.

If you do, supporting tree planting in Uganda is an excellent way of capturing carbon, man made or not.

Travelling up through mid Wales and seeing the vast areas of diseased trees that have been removed, surely we would be better spending the money here.

I think it’s because carbon capture is more effective (and cheaper) near the equator.

So this now expired initiative was not effective? I would prefer money raised in Wales spent in Wales.

Tbf that looks really good.

However if the primary aim of a project is carbon capture then the Ugandan project is much more effective.

I’d prefer they both stayed.

The initiative in Wales was basically plant a tree for every child born and there was little follow up and great deal of waste. It would have been better, morbid I know, if a tree was planted for everyone who passed away as a memorial. In my opinion these saplings would be tendered, loved and nurtured.
