Can anyone explain why there is a "problem" in not releasing them earlier than their original release date.

The issue that Burnham has to work with is treating people equally under the law, so in the PC's case all those convicted of manslaughter need to be treated equally. Burnham says that prison overcrowding is the " problem " at hand.

So does that mean all serving time for manslaughter will be released ( if they've served x amount of their sentence) ? not sure why everyone should be treated equally in this case considering they showed no remorse or empathy .

Would be interesting to see what a lip reader say about what they were shouting as they got into that van They deserve a lifetime of pain We keep repeated ourselves or at least me but this country has still not grasped it Them or us Prisoners welfare is an oxymoron in some ways Many care for their welfare Many look for Jesus as a release Never before have we need capital deterrent It is immoral we do not have it

You can’t approach it like that Boundy, it’s not how the law works. And don’t mistake this as me siding with these scumbags because it’s not. No law exists at present that determines a different sentencing tariff if it involves the death of an emergency worker. Creating one now and rushing it through the houses could ensure these two serve their correct time (which still isn’t enough imo). However, if they make an exception for these two then the law in its present situation would be seen as being unequal. How would those who have seen their loved ones killed in similar situations feel when theirs go free but the other two don’t. It has to apply to everyone in the situation equally. Also, if you change the law now as suggested above, then it still is a kick in the teeth for those other people affected because their loved ones’ killers still walk free. In truth, there should have been a law made many years ago that punishes offences against emergency workers more severely than others. If that were the case, this wouldn’t be an issue. What we can’t do is apply the law through emotion. It has to be fair and equal despite it sticking in one’s craw at times like this.

But crime is emotional These two stand out because of their utter contempt and lack of remorse Laws can be changed and quickly too The question is , do we have the balls to? We don’t Hence my use of the word “ coward” This should be the Rubicon moment If nothing else it shows how perverse is our “ justice” system Anyway , I’m off out to drown a few puppies as I’ve gotten all mad again

It is R, yes. But we have to apply the law fairly and equally. It’s all very well isolating this issue so that PC Harper’s family and police officers are considered but what about the many others who will see it as a complete injustice as the perpetrators relating to their loved ones’ death are let free. As I said, the law should have been made with this type of scenario in mind centuries ago not when we are faced with it like this.

Thanks for taking the time to explain , but doesn't sentencing also include whether the convicted has: a. pleaded guilty or not guilty in the first instance, b. shown contrition c. proven that .My understanding is that sentencing follows guidelines but thats all they are and when has the politicians cared about what the public think whether its fair or not. To me we're on a slippery slope when we can't or unwilling to ensure justice is carried out and seen to be done.

This isn’t about the original sentence though. That may have been applied using the points you mention. It’s about the new arrangement to free up prison space. They can’t keep them there and let others go as it would be unfair on the families affected by the crimes. Those people would expect the same treatment as the family / friends of PC Harper with the law being as it is currently. Personally, I’d have given them both a lethal injection as soon as those grins appeared on their faces but that’s not in the law as it stands either!

I agree matey really I do I don’t believe anyone should get early release full stop Do the time This case however is visceral for the rats smirks Every day victims are insulted by derisory sentences after being given spurious defences by legal “ chaps” The Manchester airport legal aid bill was & 113000 to fund two dangerous lying scum that the police officers should have hospitalised rather than crying into a camera Police nowadays are terrified of upsetting anyone , often the very people who need disposing of ( so to speak) Luckily I served when you could defend yourself if you thought your life or safety was at risk I’m still here, it works Politicians and senior ranks have nurtured this and it’s why thugs feel free to do as they please

They seem to be making an exception for these two because of the public outcry. Fair enough. But what about the other hundreds and hundreds of victims who have been murdered, raped, assaulted only to see their offenders walk free to potentially do it again? It’s a kick in the balls for them that’s what it is.

They seem and I'm not one for normally knocking the police but they haven't helped themselves recently with the many cases of wrongful arrests, including arresting christian preachers ,the Henry Novak case ,the grooming games etc .

The police has indeed not helped itself What it should have voted for , years ago, was the right to strike The Service is making politically nuanced decisions Morale is very low Few officers implicitly trust their colleagues Anyone thinking they “”look after themselves” is deluded
