One of the most perplexing aspects of this case is the quality of Arday's academic research, especially what is left when the plagiarism is stripped out. Sociology is a broad discipline with a lot of good solid research, as well as the stuff that attracts criticism. Arday's work seems to be characterised by tiny convenience samples, absence of systematic analysis, attribution of the same interview extracts to different research participants in different papers, and slavish adherence to CRT with no real theoretical development on the basis of the empirical work. It is mediocre research and very little of it features in quality peer-reviewed journals. Yet somehow this modest CV got him one of the most prestigious chairs in this field. Chelly Halsey (a leading light of the past in sociology of education at Oxford) will be spinning in his grave. As others have said, senior academic staff at Cambridge involved in Arday's appointment, as well as those who signed the Good Law Project petition, have egg splattered all over their faces. It is another setback for Cambridge and the situation of Oxford isn't much better. [Post edited 6 Aug 11:50]

One question is whether this was a "black swan event" (meaning an egregious but atypical case) or more of a canary in the mine scenario (a scandal that points to a much wider problem in our universities). I incline towards the latter. By coincidence, Prof. Norman Fenton has just published a book entitled "The capture of academia." He had to self-publish through Amazon because no commercial publisher would take the book, but from reviews it seems worth a read.

Yesterday the Met Police admitted they wasted four months investigating a journalist without reason, today they said they failed to monitor a sex offender to the extent that he went on to kill.
Policing is a difficult job but some serial offenders do stand out and it is not the job of the police to decide what should and shouldn't be investigated by the press [Post edited 7 Aug 18:19]

Farah Ahmed has explicitly attacked 'western education' as a 'threat' to Muslims, condemned democracy and integration, and criticised British schools for teaching pupils that child marriage is wrong.

Taking your own life after saying a few porkies is tragic and was probably driven by worldwide scrutiny and accusations which he could not handle in his current state .
Some of my CV reports have lets say over stated my achievements but never lied just flowered them out a bit .
Why did Cambridge Dons and their so called thorough background checks and failings let this fella into a role he was so out of his depth in .
Guy has lost his life which is tragic , but maybe Cambridge should take a look at themselves and look at their methods of fast tracking the elite obviously not ready or prepared .

He should have had the help he so clearly needed but it was also correct that he had to face the accountability and consequences of his actions. A tragic outcome though. | |
