Just been routing around and this ,even now, seen as one of the greatest guitar solos.
Frankly, although I love this song and the oeuvre of the Byrds and McGuinn particularly,to me,the solo is a dog's breakfast. Worth a look at McGuinn and his clear contempt for Crosby.
I believe it was banned by the BBC because of it's perceived drug references. However the band denied it. Make up your own minds but nevertheless it is a classic.

It is a song about the Byrds tour of Britain;grey grey town ,known for its sound-reference to Liverpool.
I know John Squire is probably a bit older than Johnny Marr but I wouldn’t underestimate the impression that Marr’s jangly Gretsch made on all the players of that era. If you listen out for it you can hear it everywhere.

Marr is a bit of a hero of mine Loh. A bad boy older brother. I think John Squire more nailed an iconic sound, rather than the diversity of Marr. I think Squire is only about a year senior. Marr was 19/20 when The Smiths emerged. Although he used a Gretsch, and often live, his main guitars were a Fender Telecaster and Rickenbackers (as do REM’s Peter Buck). He is mainly a Fender Jaguar man now though. My daughter suggested I buy a Marr signature Jag. Until I pointed out that would be £1500 less to support her at university next year.

Though I was never really much of a fan I did see The Smiths play Swansea University back in ‘84. If memory serves Marr was mostly playing a beautiful Gretsch Country Gentleman that night. He had about three others on stands behind him, one was a Rickenbacker thinking about it, but the CG double cutaway was his main pick for the gig, Prof.
Thirty seven years ago! Where has it all gone, eh?

Saw the the night before at Cardiff University. Bought the tickets the day of ‘O’ level results, along with the 12 inch ‘William it was really nothing’. A great record as its ‘b’ sides were ‘How soon is now?’ and ‘Please, please, please let me get what I want’.
The Gretsch was heavily used live then and until the ‘Queen is dead’ tour , but the custom Tele was the big studio guitar. 37 years seems a short and long time ago. The start of around 14 years seeing more bands than I can remember. Would love to see one now.

I’d happily settle for a busker in a beer garden the way things have been, Prof.
