The Prince of Wales will be guest of honour as one of the world's smaller democracies formally severs its connections with the Crown and proclaims itself the republic of Barbados.

Barbados is one of the Queen's 16 realms, countries where she's head of state, but will this will end on Tuesday.

Island's constitution allows them to remove the monarch amid disquiet over lack of a referendum on the issue

Lets hope this means we don't have to give them any of our foreign aid money in future.

Barbados is not on the ODA list and so does not receive aid. GDP per capita is similar to Poland or Hungary.

Shame prejudice can make people blind to facts.

Just the latest of so many nations to decide on a modern independent future amongst the nations of the world. Not one has ever asked to return.

No need for Westmonster nor the Royals.

I am sure we wish them all the best.

For some reason I read that tweet to the tune of Michael Jackson’s thriller.

“A modern, independent future?” I’d suggest you do a little research as to what exactly is behind these events, Killy. Shine a little spotlight for yourself on the malignant creep of Chinese influence in the western world.

Google ‘Barbados China’ and have a look what turns up.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Not very green of him to fly all that way just to hear them say they are ditching his mum.

The lack of investment by the US and Europe in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean has given China freedom to influence these regions hugely. You are right there Loh. Seen it with my own eyes in Africa. Huge infrastructure development by the Chinese in Ethiopia -roads and rail with huge industrial developments with cheaper labour and little restrictions in operations, As China (and its burgeoning middle class) get richer, it will be on the back of other countries as we did in the past. And like us, it may be far from benign in many cases.

I thought Barbados gained independence 55 years ago. Its economy is very dependent on tourism. There are just changing their nominal head of state to a president.

Their current governor general will become president elect though not sure they are holding an election.

On a more important note, did anybody else see Rihanna in that dress? I had absolutely no idea Barbados was that cold.

I'm guessing he didn't look up to notice

Put it this way, if she turned too quickly that new president could have lost an eye. Apparently Prince Charles was so shocked he nearly had a stroke but luckily one of the ambassadors leaned over and reminded him that’s how his brother got into trouble.

Being a 1 Party State where the turnover of politicians and senior people is minimal, China is able to have long term consistency in its planning and decision making, it’s also looking outward and seeking to extend its influence.
Compare this with whats happening in the West, policies change when new governments are sworn in and they can often change when a new leader takes power in the same party. I am not saying the democracies are wrong because I firmly believe in democracy I am just pointing out the difference between China and the West and the potential difficulties the West faces going forward.

As to whether Barbados should be a Commonwealth country, it’s their call but I’d have though the best way to address the issue was via referendum.

I’d also add the Chinese are taking a long term view and are “investing” their money to assist other countries develop, meanwhile the U.K. is cutting its oversees aid budget. Can’t blame countries for then turning towards the China and falling under their influence.

I am not advocating haemorrhaging money out of the U.K., but we do need a longer term strategic approach that’s in the U.K’s national interest as opposed to a particular individual or parties interest.

Not sure China is investing in the true meaning. They seem to loaning money at high interest rates secured against the countries assets and natural resources.
