| Putin - again 18:31 - Mar 9 with 1615 views | johnlangy | We're pretty reliably informed that a large majority of Russians support what Putin is doing in Ukraine, the reason being that that large majority get all their information from the state owned/controlled media. And this large majority are the older part of the population. And with that large majority supporting him it's far easier to do what he's doing. The minority that don't support him are young/younger people who have become used to getting their info via the net. And certainly don't agree with what's happening. I'll guess at the ratio being 75/25 just for the point of the discussion. The younger ones will continue to disagree and in 10 years time they will be maybe 50% of the population, in 20 years maybe 75%. And by then Putin will be gone whatever happens during the current conflict. So, if Russia gets to the point where a large majority disagrees with the way the country is run and doesn't support Putin, or whoever replaces him if they're of the same ilk, will Putin be the last of his kind to rule Russia ? | | | | |
| Putin - again on 19:17 - Mar 9 with 1567 views | Catullus | I watched a video that suggested there was actually quite a mix of ages that support or disagree with him. Some elderly Russians gave a very scathing opinion and some younger ones supported him. It's no different to over here, people choose what they want to believe. Look at it this way, if there are Russian deserters who have returned home and told the truth or some who have just spoken to family and told the truth then the truth is out. Having seen protests being broken up, there was a fair mix of ages. Sadly I doubt Putin is the last of his kind. Those in power behind the scenes will remain there and carefully control who rises to the top. The way Russian politics works is deeply ingrained and protected by the power brokers behind the scenes. | |

In many ways yes but in the way I stated, it's no different, people choose what they want to believe regardless of the evidence. And when the evidence is very strictly controlled and they mostly see what Putin wants them to see, it's a surprise so many Russians have been out protesting but the truth must be coming out somehow. I wonder how Moscow jack is getting on?

I stepped off the plane at Sheremetyevo airport, walking through into passport control I was met by a row of Russian soldiers with assault rifles and a row of full body metal detectors. Very different to the UK. We left the airport and negotiated a fee with a taxi driver who spoke surprisingly good English, a fair ride later we arrived at our hotel, on entry we were met by an armed security guard. Very different to the UK. We went to a pub/bar, met some other Welsh fans, found some seats and were approached by a Russian guy who wanted to talk, wanted to know about the West, about the UK, he spent most of the evening with us, nice bloke. The following day we went back to that bar for a few before grabbing a taxi to take us to the football. We got out and walked to the ground, from behind us came a platoon of Soldiers double timing it to the stadium. We got there and there were soldiers at every gate, every level on the stairs, at the end of every row inside the ground and around the pitch too. Very different to the UK. That was 2003.

I accept that it's not as simple as old people are pro what Putin is doing and young people are anti what he's doing. But as a general point, from what we are given to believe, that appears to be the case. A hundred years ago the only Russians who would have been aware of the outside world would have been the ones in power. The rest of the population (99.9%) would not have had a clue about what really goes on in the West. But that has undoubtedly started to change in the last 2/3 decades when it's become so easy to get news from anywhere in the world via the net. You say people choose what they want to believe regardless of the evidence. But if all the 'evidence' they get is the evidence Putin decides they can see then it's hardly surprising if they believe that. As more and more of them are able to access other 'evidence' then people will change. It may be slow but must happen.

I was at that one. It was as you say. We got chased back to our hotel. They weren't so clever as my mate Razor was knocking them out as they tried to get through the revolving door. After he punished half a dozen of them they wanted to talk. The remaining 10 or 11 drank with us all night. Mad.
| Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Most are petrified of having an opinion that doesn’t fit the rhetoric, bit like twitter.

Were you in "The Golden Ring" because that one was attacked by some Spartak fans on the day of the match. We were opposite but I can't remember the name. John Langy, I covered that it's surprising how many Russians seem to know the truth despite Putin's control on the media. That's the internet for you, but the video I saw had a fair mix of ages and some real oldies were scathing of Putin. On the news today out of the near 2 million who have fled Ukraine they said about 100k had chosen to go to Russia.
