Yes by changing that which patently does not work and adapting it so that it does. Which is why we have better results when we do not play Martinball for 90 minutes.

It’s no different in style of play, just now more perfected hence the results. My opinion of course, but as referred to you can’t walk in to a job as a player or a manager and get it right from day one. There has to be a learning process especially for the players who in some cases have been ingrained in to another way of playing. I think your post though does give an undercoat of appreciation for RM as if that is what you believe, then it’s endorsing his qualities to learn and develop as well.

The system has evolved over the season, as players and Martin adapt to each other. Martinball just a stick you and a couple of others beat him with.

Thing is he is the same manager that we had on day one, that we have today, there has to be some sort of agreement he was right on day one as he is today. Because he remains the one calling the shots and making the decisions. And it’s proving to be a success for now.,

I’d say he was horrendously wrong for much of this season. I think if he didn’t come under the pressure he did, we would still be plodding around the back trying to make 800 passes a game still to this day. He appears to now be getting it somewhat right, but only relatively recently. So I’m no way close to being convinced yet. Encouraged but not convinced. I’ve seen too much rubbish this season and too much reverting back to square one to believe the lessons have been truly learned and corners turned yet. I’ll need to see this for a few more games yet before I go into next season confident he’s going to adopt the correct tactics.

Definitely not perfect, never will be for me, but the linchpins have been the players, and for me some of them have taken far too long to adapt, however as a group both players and management we should be encouraged but again IMO awe have to understand it doesn’t happen overnight and I hope not over more than one season.

| Swansea City moving on and looking like the team Russell Martin wants them to be on 13:50 - Apr 10 with 522 views | A_Fans_Dad | Keith, there is one minor detail wrong with your analysis. He had 2 seasons at MK Dons to perfect his "transition". It must have become obvious to even him that it wasn't working with their skill levels. I am sure he thought that moving up a league it would be easier and it would work. But now I am sure he has realised that possession for the sake of it is not correct, it must be used to launch attacks, but not necessarily with short passes which are too easy to defend against when usedd all the time. However I still think that faffing around our own penalty area is asking for unnecessary trouble. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He didn't have 2 seasons at Mk, he joined them in November and the season was curtailed early due to covid. His one full season they finished 13th, and received plaudits for their style of play, hence our interest

Do you mean that they stopped all training during that season of COVID?

He took over in November when they were in the relegation zone, the season ended after 35 games when he had secured their safety.

Keyboard pundits have defined 'Martinball' themselves and it has not come from Russell. Russell Martin defines 'Martinball' not keyboard pundits. The theory that Swansea win more often with 60% possession against 75% is not to do with any choice of Martin. Martin endeavours to get 70% possession and it is the opposing team that contest this. Swansea play better against teams that do not "park the bus " and fight like dogs like Hull did up there. Results have often been better away as teams want parity at least on their own patch. These wins are now presented as the manager parking away his principles by the keyboard pundits. Its nonsense. Martin who is closer to reality will present thise good result as his way falling into place.
