Iran on the brink of being thrown out of the World Cup 13:48 - Oct 31 with 1178 viewsKeithHaynes

For human rights breaches.
And supporting Russia.
As I’ve said before if that’s the case the whole group should be banned if supporting this war is an issue.

I wonder where the pressure for this is coming from, and how heavily it is being applied?

FIFA have always taken a strictly neutral line on conflict and for good reason. Much of Africa is in a semi-permanent state of small wars and armed anarchy, it’s not the place of the blazered bigwigs in Zurich to play arbiter. It’s not a minefield they are particularly minded or qualified to be blundering into.

Ok, thanks.
I think that countries standing up against a despot who is threatening Armageddon can feel comfortable with that decision. Those supporting a regime are clearly no better than said regime. This is not opinion, it’s fact regardless of those on here who tend to be ‘controversial’ let’s say.

UK and USA are helping our allies Ukraine defend themselves against a Russian invasion. Russia is already defeated as it army is not fit for purpose.

The people in Ukraine can join NATO if that is their choice. It is nothing to do with Russia. The people of Cuba have left leaning Government and Nicaragua and Venezuela. Russia can sanction Ukraine if they do not like their politics. This will not bother Ukraine one jot.

To be honest I wasn’t even thinking of Ukraine when I posted about not having clean hands, I was thinking more of the proxies ourselves and the Yanks arm and employ in the third world to protect the interests of big companies like BP.

In a world of mirk ourselves and our cousins across the water have inhabited some of the darkest recesses.

Well yes, probably but this potential ban for Iran is down to their support of Russia and thur invasion of Ukraine I imagine.

Yes, but there has to be more to it. You’ve got the likes of Senegal and Morocco competing at Qatar both of whom refused to endorse UN sanctions against Russia, in the case of Morocco a recent announcement was made that they have just signed an agreement for Rosatom, the Russian state-owned nuclear agency, to build a power plant outside of Rabat.

I could be wrong but I don’t think I’ve heard or read of any disquiet at their participation in the World Cup?

You can’t ban one and not the other, trust me I know about that on here 😂

Edit - And don’t mention controversial, I did once but I think I got away with it !

They ar free countries and can trade with whomever they like and not obliged to sanction Russia. It may be a poor commercial decision but nothing that should lead to a ban. The iran issue is the suppression of human rights by violent means especially against women.

” The iran issue is the suppression of human rights by violent means especially against women.”

Right, ok, so FIFA are embarked on a global moral mission to enforce western sensibilities? You don’t really see it in that light, do you? That baleful domestic situation you highlight in regards to Iran is unfortunately replicated across much of the developing world.

What are FIFA to do? Limit membership to Europe and Europe overseas? Perhaps they could contract The Fabian Society to vet member nations?

It’s a pretty bottomless can of worms to open.

FIFA has probably been leaned on by 'the West'. It is the west that pays them most of their funds. I doubt the Mullahs care too much for football but the populace might take notice.

I take your point that it is a World cup and to be global it does have to live with some countries it does not like. It is n not a White liberal predominantly Christian world cup. Presumably Iran could only be banned if it broke specific FIFA rules which I am not familiar with.

Here you go. A Spanish legal firm has contested FIFA are g breaking their own rules by admitting iran

"It is indisputable that the behavior of the Iranian Football Federation towards women within the Iranian Football hemisphere completely contravenes FIFA’s gender equality and gender justice agenda and is no doubt a clear violation of FIFA’s Statutes and Regulations."

Saudi Arabia are in Group C at Qatar. If Iran falls short of FIFA’s ‘gender justice agenda’ then so do the Saudis, and then some.

If rules are enforced unequally with a blind eye turned here, a nudge and a wink there, then surely FIFA itself will be brought into disrepute, don’t you think?
