| In depth Russell Martin interview on Coaches Voice on 10:41 - Apr 3 with 1087 views | A_Fans_Dad | "Do we want to finish as high up the league as we can? Of course. If we are able to do that and impact the top end of the league and the playoffs, then brilliant. But I don’t spend too much time obsessing over that stuff. If we can improve the players we have, improve how the team looks and functions, and improve the way the fans feel about that team, then I think we’re on the right track." That says it all, as long as the players & team look good the results and league position don't really matter. I don't think the fans would agree, because his idea of what "looks good" is not necessarily the same as what the fans think looks good, ie scoring goals and winning. He thinks the MKD players looked good in league 1, but they are not good enough for the Championship where other managers have far more nous. [Post edited 4 Apr 2023 10:58]

I suppose he is saying that if he gets the first part right, the rest will look after itself. Well not so far it hasn’t. It’s easy to get carried away every time we beat Cardiff but it’s only 3 pts a game same as any other side. I still have many, many doubts.

No different to Cooper then, he didn’t look good and still failed.

Deflection tactics.....at least Cooper failed at the final hurdles....Martin has failed to get us to the starters paddock

The reason for the failure is clear from what he has written. He is convinced that anyone can play the same football as the top few teams in the world. If they could they wouldn't be playing in the Championship and lower leagues.

Would he say it’s possible as it’s a lower level of player then it’s achievable ? At that level.

No, even lower level players know how to pounce on stupid mstakes around our penalty area and any decent manager will tell them exactly what to look for.

Your talking about playing out from the back, I can’t recall the last time a team scored against Swansea from a keeper pass out.

Where did I mention playing out from the back from a keeper pass out? Passing mistakes don't just come from a keeper pass out, they also come from throw ins, back passes, across field passes and free kicks. They lead to more defensive pressure which we can't consistently cope with. The longer the ball remains around our penalty area the more likely it is for a mistake to happen. Even Man City concede occasional goals for the same reason. It comes down to a simple difference of opinion, you seem to agree with him and think he can make it work at our level and based on the last few years I don't. So let's just agree to disagree.

Very simply,Martin seems bizarrely obsessed with sating his ego with possession stats . All real managers look for trophies, success and take pride in accumulating points He is utterly the wrong man for us if we have ambition as a club. Fans always want glory no matter how small

Well, he gave us that ‘small’ glory on Saturday.

He did yes but by the skin of our teeth....2 nil and we gave away again that lead for once we got the winning goal at a late stage... Last season we did them comfortably yet this season we needed them to go down to 10 men at the .com and we almost only scraped a draw up there

In the grand scale of things football,it is. How many outside south Wales are even aware of the game . Such is our rapid demise ,we do not feature countrywide as we once did. Russ doesn’t seem to want to go up,preferring his process is brought to fruition .

I thought we had a better side last season, despite the league position at the end. I will add, ‘we’ won last Saturday.
