Incidentally I was intrigued some years ago to read that the old ground has by far the largest attendance record of any of the Swansea sports stadiums at around 50,000. Viv Davies was my Latin teacher in BG,which was full of masochistic , psychotic and patronising teachers . I was a good footballer ,if I say so myself, but chose to go to BG because they had a pool and I was a very strong swimmer. Big mistake as they hated football especially Viv ,a macho man who spawned the very camp Russel T Davies, ironic of what .!
I was also handy at rugby but refused to play for the school rugby team as I played football on a Saturday. This drove him nuts and he gave me a dogs life.
However, I got over this and enjoyed both games.
Now…here on Wirral we have many Rugby Clubs and many in the Wallasey area are little different to Welsh ones out west. It is played in the Grammar schools here so there is an element of superiority believing rugby players are more sportsmanlike and less gauche. No football team claps the opponent off the pitch being an example as is the grotesque faux injury cheating so part of the football game . Therefore ,rugby folk have a point . Football and the way it sees players openly abusing officials has no defence to this .
There is also an element of inverted snobbery on football being obsessed with class…working class. Just play the forking game | |
