I know Maine well. I was best man in my friends wedding in Portland.

I notice that several commentators zero in on the idea of banning "assault rifles" as the solution, but this rests on various misconceptions and I think a better approach is tighter checks on potential gun owners, and possibly restrictions on magazine capacities. The AR15-style "black" rifles that can be legally purchased differ from most military M16 or M4 rifles, because they are semi-automatic rather than switchable to automatic. Internally they are similar to many semi-automatic hunting rifles with more traditional designs, that can also take magazines of various capacities. The only automatic rifles that can be legally owned are pre-1986 registered weapons that are very expensive. I think the problem with Card was not that he had a "black rifle", but that he was allowed to own a firearm at all when he was found to have mental health issues. [Post edited 28 Oct 2023 13:58]
