| Cap on bankers' bonuses to be scrapped ... 17:47 - Oct 24 with 1439 views | theloneranger | The cap on bankers' bonuses is being removed as part of a post-Brexit shake-up of UK financial rules, it has been confirmed. "The plan was announced by former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng last year as a way of making London a more attractive place to do business." "It was one of the few mini-budget policies to remain after most were unwound by Mr Kwarteng's successor." "The cap on bonuses will be lifted from 31 October, the regulator said." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-67206997 | |

Regulate the market. Crack down on unethical or risky financial activities for sure. What a company pays its staff in bonuses should be a matter between the board of directors and their shareholders and nobody else.

I agree in principle, but we seem to be in a position where the government want to deregulate the market which is likely to result in more risky practices to make the quick buck.

Now that I agree with. Time and time again the rules are loosened with broadly similar results. That's where the control needs to be.

A culture with Oligachs , Shieks . Politicians and now again the Banks who have got the green light to fleece us once more . Footballers in the Middle East earning wages which are disgraceful , yet next door in that area innocent children cannot get a clean bottle of water to drink . Gets to the stage , I sometimes think what a messed up world we live in .

Not only in the Middle East do players earn a fortune. It's strange that we live in a country where a company (bank) can not pay an employee whatever they want, but another company (football club) can. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Great point. Also the case these footballers “ pine” for the poor

I remember as I'm sure you do the banking crisis and who had to bail them out , so when it comes to "bonuses" I had little sympathy when it was capped .

Politically,it sums up Conservatives right now. Getting slaughtered in the polls seems hardly worth getting upset about. They forget many cabinet ministers will next year lose their rotten borough seat and they’ll have to return to the Bar or the family business to maintain their lifestyle . They are incredible It seems they truly do not give a monkeys A starmer government could mean massive changes and not all good ones. If yiu have a car, look out as will those looking at changing boilers Who’d be a landlord ,eh .

They shouldn't have been bailed out. They should have been left to fail and those responsible prosecuted and jailed. That's on the Government of the time. Besides, not all banks required a bailout. Just four were in the UK, money which has already mostly been recouped. [Post edited 25 Oct 2023 12:49]

But whether that is right or wrong this has an awful look at this time. In the last year and a bit the Conservative Party has been its own worst enemy. There are numerous MPs and party apparatchiks who richly deserve their P45s.

And wasn't it the prospect of massive bonuses that drove the most risky of practices?

Yes, it was the huge rewards from the derivative markets
