Born in Kent, MacGowan was the son of Irish immigrants and fronted The Pogues from 1982 until their break-up in 2014. He had formed the Irish punk band Pogue Mahone, later shortened to The Pogues, in 1982 and released seven studio albums. In 1988 Kirsty MacColl collaborated with The Pogues for the Christmas song Fairytale of New York, written by MacGowan, which got to number two in the UK chart and remains one of the UK's best-loved Christmas songs.
MacGowan revealed he was diagnosed with encephalitis last year in a video posted to social media on New Year's Eve. It is is an uncommon but serious condition in which the brain becomes inflamed, according to the NHS website. He has also used a wheelchair since 2015 after injuring himself in a fall.
A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.
A total genius. People will just think of 'The Fairytale of New York ' which a great song. However the first time I heard the album Rum Sodomy and the Lash it was a total different gravy Lyrics were sublime and the music was a mixture of the Dubliners meet the Clash. Fall from the Grace of God was also a fine album. As was the first Popes album. Shane lived his life fast. Alcohol and drugs a plenty. Considering he was given 6 weeks to live in the late 80's he did well.

We all have different tastes but if you can just read the lyrics to the Rum Sodomy and the Lash album. Especially Sick Bed of Cuchallan, The Old Main Drag and Sally Macllelan. Also their cover of Eric Boggles The Band Played Waltzing Matilda an homage to all the Anzacs who died at Gallipoli.

Inspired many punk / folk bands to the current day. Genius mate.,

Their best song imo. It was definately their most commercial/main stream easy listening by sound... Cait O' Riordan just had a lovely sweet gentle voice.

I've got it on 12 inch vinyl. Remembering buying it. Beautiful song written about Sid Viscous and Nancy Spundgen but like all great songs could be about anyone.

I saw the Pogues on a number of different occasions. The best Finsbury Park . This is mid 80s well before the corporate festivals. Got a tube from West London with my then girlfriend now wife. It absolutely pissd down with rain and it was as held in a Marquee in the park. Well I can safely say one of the roughest gigs I've ever been to. The London Irish were climbing the Marquee and sliding down it. There were groups of skinheads looking for fights. It was a little lively to say the least, the toilets were an event on their own. I remember the Proclaimers playing and at the time I thought they were shite. I did mellow to them after that mind. The Pogues were incredible. All the early stuff. Saw them next in Swansea Top Rank..Grace of God tour. Kirstie Mcall sung. Much more polished. The last time I saw them was in Cardiff at one of their Christmas gigs . They shuffled Shane on for a few numbers, quite sad really. Cerys Mathews sung on Fairytale.

Mother was an accomplished musician Dad could speak Greek and Latin . He was on 2 bottles of Guinness a day at 5 . He was reading Sartre , Voltaire Joyce and DH Lawrence at 12 . Expelled from School for drugs . Went on to form the Pogues and worldwide fame. They don't make them like they used to ! Saw him at the NIA Birmingham it was a wild night but a good one . He looked taller on the stage than I expected . RIP Shane Mc Gowan.

Didn’t really do him any good really . Hard for me to eulogise over people who waste their talents .

If it wasn't for the alcohol and drugs I don't think he would have written the brilliant song and lyrics he did. Like a lot of truly talented people..Dylan Thomas, George Best, Jimi Hendrix etc..unfortunately there is a self destructive button within them.

Yes,I see that as Sgt Pepper was created by LSD. However, I ain’t going to be disingenuous about drugs . I detest them. H bear in mind, much great music created drug free

Indeed, but he bucked the trend, like Joe Strummer.
When you think of it, the converse is true of artists born into abject poverty or with difficult domestic circumstances turn out as part of Music Royalty .
