7m Whittaker bid rejected by Plymouth 11:53 - Jul 23 with 1500 viewsKeithHaynes

From Glasgow Rangers.

That would have earned the Swans around £1.4m in a sell on agreement.

Looks like there’s more money incoming this summer. Plymouth rumoured to want 15m. That’s almost 3m for the Swans if they get it.

This past years salary savings are very much improving on released players and sales from last August. Plus the simple arithmetic from this summers sales and incomings see’s the Swans in one million plus profit. We shouldn’t forget the few million tossed our way from Leeds in June as a part of the Piroe agreement.

It’s very clear to see the club are working on not next years P&S rules, that should be far healthier than this year, but the year after.

Doesn’t matter mate, the work they do over this financial P&S year is reflected in 2026, so if there was an interested buyer they could display an upturn in financial fortunes when the books are reviewed, as in any sale of a business.

That will form part of their thinking.

I suspect Potter was a little vexed about a Scottish centre forward lack of professionalism. He was highly rated and Potter handled marvellously selling the player for around £20m .

Martin had a similarly relationship with Whittaker. A £10m footballer all day according to the press. Martin did not handle the issue in the clubs interests never "advertised and promoted" th player. Got into a confrontation with the owners and player and ge got sold for pennies.

Some might argue Potter was acting like a manager and Martin was acting like a coach.

That’s exactly what sending him on loan where he’ll play every week is.

Should never have been recalled. Didn’t want to come back, Martin didn’t want him to come back. They didn’t see eye to eye and he would never have displaced Piroe whoever was in charge. This isn’t hindsight, I said it at the time.

If the owners had the foresight not to bring him back against everyone’s wishes, he wouldn’t have refused to play, wouldn’t have drifted around like he didn’t care when he did play. There quite likely would have either been a bigger fee, or a way back for him with the manager he didn’t get on with and Piroe both leaving.

If he goes for 15m as expected the club with the transfer fee will have earned around 4.5m from the investment. Not pennies 🤷🏻‍♂️ Long term business pay off for me.

Whittaker was under contract. Swansea should have managed the player better and got 100%. The managers job is to do this. Work in the clubs interests. Laudrup got Danny Graham away for £5m never once suggesting he didn't like the player.

The idea that he would have displaced Piroe is doing a bit of work. Realistically there's no real reason why Whittaker and JP couldn't have played together. Piroe partnered with plenty of others enough times, especially Cullen as many unfortunately witnessed whilst Whittaker kicked his heels on the bench.

Martin didn't understand what he had in MW and showed absolutely no interest in finding out. The most damning thing is that a player who had shown strong glimpses of quality when given worthwhile opportunities was sent out on loan in the first place.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I'm not a fan of Russy but he wouldn't have deserved that.

I’m not sure how much you saw of Whittaker either when he played against us last year or for us towards the end of the season before that.

He drifts about, doesn’t get involved physically at all and relies on his undoubted ability to produce bits of magic. He was one of the worst players on the pitch last season, yet he scored a cracking goal and they won 1-0.

To indulge a player like that, you need someone to do the donkey work. Piroe and Cullen actually worked very well. Cullen had the best goals to minutes ratio in the league (I think) and Piroe had about 20.

It’s not always a case of having the two best finishers on the pitch.

Edit. From memory, we had Piroe and Obafemi here at the time. If he was prepared to bide his time he may not have gone on loan.

To be fair, £15m is ballsy for a league one club. Obviously I hope they get it. Not sure they will, particularly if the player wants to leave.

Sometimes a player fits a club and nowhere else, Leon as an example, we will just have to wait and see.

I think he’s one of the most talented players we’ve had here since relegation. It’s also a bit of an open secret he’s a bit up himself and problematic when he doesn’t get his own way.

I’m not saying he’s not worth £15m. He’s very good. I’m just not sure how far Plymouth will be able to go before they cave in. If they get £10m for him I’ll be happy.

I saw plenty of Whittaker that suggested he was worth a decent run of games in a position that suited him, something neither Cooper nor Martin saw fit to provide him with, whilst Steven Schumacher did and reaped the rewards.

Absolutely nothing Cullen did during the time they were both at the club suggested that he was a better option.

Steven Schumacher didn’t have Ayew or Piroe in that position.

As for Cullen. He’s not as talented as Whittaker, of course he’s not, but he did work well with Piroe. Not going on strike may have helped too.
