How long will we keep our u23 team going? 13:56 - Jun 3 with 2235 viewsSwans9

I noticed that we had alot of trialists playing for us last season and with some being promoted to the first team we seem light on numbers.

Noted yesterday Siggy still Evertin's buggest buy £45 m.
That made 30m profit
Clucas lost us 8 mill
Oli 20m
Rodon 12m
James 20m

What we spent?

And yet ,we bitch amongst ourselves and fail to direct the anger and contempt at those responsible for our appalling slide into relative no mans land as to where we were.

Last season Garrick, Cooper B , Cooper O, Cullen, Latibeaudiere, Whitaker, Blake, Josh Thomas are eight plaers who in past time would have been regulars.

Cabango got established. Benda got injured but is presumbly ready with a eason under his belt already.

Garrick, Cooper B got plenty of EFL games under their belt. Cullen, Latibaeudire and Whttaker got some game time at the higher championship level. Ollie Cooper missed out in terms of game time but got a season of full time training.

Gould, Blake and Thomas may have had some benefit in the LoW or might now get moved on.

The new academy head started in December and has set about making changes, which includes bringing in new faces. Trials ahead of being able to sign terms at the end of the football year are pretty normal, but there were a lot, sometimes 4 or 5 starters a game. It's not really a sign of imminent closure, we've signed a left back and goalkeeper that I'm aware of. I'm sure more will be announced over the next month.

There has been a shortage of numbers even before that, due to covid restrictions keeping players like Webb, Cooper, Williams, Evans away from u23s duties at various times of the season, and honestly it's just been a bit of a lean patch in development and recruitment. First year scholars and under 16s have been playing a lot of football up the age groups and it's an exciting local batch in quality and quantity.

Swansea fans lived the dream under the 'Jenkinista' era. An upward trajectory for 12 years no debts great football world class infrastriucture from the rat infested wreckage of that health haazrd the Vetch.. A 14 year journey from the post nuclear decimation to winning 5-0 at Wembley.

The fans thought "Crickey this is easy we are the chosen ones".

People like me accepted that after Monk had taken the club to 8th the only way was down. Fans demanded the 'next level'. The next level is £150,000 a week footballers and champions league. Pie in the sky.

The club had done well with good signing and a fit team with few major injuries. The club was always 3-4 injuries and 1 or 2 "big time Charlie" signings away from serious struggle. The club cashed in on rock solid pros LLorente and Sigurdson and up showed Borja Bony2 Clucas and worst of all Sanches.

The fans then turned on the legendary chairman and the fan owned Trust demanded his removal some believe from 'personality clash' issues. A fake narrtive developed of them being duped out of selling their shares and loyalists played the "sell out US money grabing Hedge fund asset stripping narrative " to the soft leftist ex sunday school protestant fanbase and the members lapped it up.

When the US owners told the fans that 'hard medicine' was due they marched on the stadium. Jenkins brought in Potter to stabilise the ship and shook hands agreeing he would do at least a 2 year stint like Brendan and Roberto. Potter regarded by the World s best football coach as "the best manager in England" was bringing back the good days with a swash buckling team with youthfull local lads thriving. They were still sadly prone to lapses and shoddy defending.

In January after no news signings with Aroso Mckay and John ousted from the first team by better local plyers Potter demanded the US owners spend £6m on Ryan Woods. Jenkins explained that the budget had been spent. He should use Grimes Byers. Potter sulked.

After a poor display at Bristol city the fans turned on the legendary Chairman administering the medicine. He was hurt an injured The need for cash became intense the the US owner demanded sales not purchases. The Chairman was told to sell. Leeds saw the chance. Jenkins negiocated hard. James wanted out and refused an new deal. Leeds offered pennies Jenkins refused. Leeds contacted the US people who told Jenkins to get anything he could from the deal. Jenkins refused turned off his phone and had a tormented sleep. The Leeds negiocaiitor told his fiery Italian chairman they had Swansea by the balls and they would close out the "deal of the centuary". El Loco would have good news in the morning.

On that dramtic night the Chairman decided to honour his word and resign rather that accept an humialiting deal. He fell on his own sword in dramatic fashion. The Leeds smug wide boys were incensed. The Trust statement sounded as if the Chairman who had achieved so much, was a failed footballer signing like Gary Friskin and "thanked him for his efforts". Sadly Jason and Steve with the Trust s comments on the ground in their ears accpeted the resignation.

Potter was free from his gentleman agreement and Swansea and James in particular played some wonderful football. His star centre forward missed a few games with "illness" which did not help. Grimes flourished and Woods bombed.

Potter cashed in and Swansea next manager was chosen by Birch. Sensible Birch wanted the same Jenkinista approach and brought in Curtis and Leopn Britton as his "brains Trust". They were wowed by Cooper's presentation. The same one that is wowing Parrrish and Mark Bright perhaps?

Cooper realises getting to the PL on a budget is not easy. The club should have stuck with Jenkins even with the casual Swede in goal and got potter to honour his contract and verbal agreement with Jenkins.

Don't think Potter sulked about using Grimes, he seemed determined to convert him into a left back for quite a while. Byers came into the team because Fer and Carroll couldn't stay fit and Fulton couldn't hack it, had to be patient for his chance (his own injuries didn't help, like the one that prevented him from going on preseason tour and unexpectedly let Dhanda in).

There was no underhand sale of the club. The SCST board partners have simply changed. Upto now the SCST held 21% of the club and still do.

Shareholders who wanted to sell sold, shareholders who wanted to part sell, sold some off their shares and shareholders who did not want to sell did not sell. Its all very straight forward.

Potter came knowing there would be little to spend (this notion he demanded a particular players for big money is nonsense).
He was seen to be doing a great job and offered far more money in a higher league. who wouldn’t take that?
As for contracts, woukd we have broken a contract and verbal agreement if we were heading for relegation.

There is no doubt in my mind Potter wanted to sign Ryan Woods. The US people would not pay the £6m required. Stoke paid it. He did not show up for the press conference after that incidence. There was speculation he had resigned. The US decisision was the correcnt one.
Grimes performed better than the highl priced Woods.

I believe Jenkins gave Potter a 3 year contract or so and had a 'gentlemen's agrreement' that he would do at least two if everthing went well. Things were develping nicely and the team was playing well adffter a period of turmoil. This pattern was seen with Brendan and Roberto. It is ckear both had other options after their first 12 months. This is sesnible and practical. Sucessful Swansea managers stay 2 seasons.

Clearly in potter was in a relegation fight he would have been given ample opportunity to turn around the ship and of course would have had his full pay if sacked.

The lack of support for Jenkins by the SCST and fans coupled with the trouble with the US owners over the James transfer saw Jenkons resign. This in turn saw Potter freed of his gentleman's agreement and the end of the return of Swansalona. In my opinion the SCST poor leadership have to accept reasonsiblity for the loss of the Swansea way. The only hope for continuation of this way was Leon Brittion but he blew it and resigned. The only remaining likely baton carrier of the Swansea way is Wayne Routledge.

OK let me spell it out for you.

Who was the architect of the Swansea Way?

- Huw Jenkins OBE. He delivered, Martinez, Brendan, Laudrup, Potter. At the club for 7 seasons.

Who gave the SCST a 100x multiple on their valuation and put US buyers in front of them?

Huw Jenkins OBE.

What Shareholders wanted him out of the club?

Swansea City Supporters Trust.

No Jenkins no Swansea Way. Britton could have done it but not made of the right stuff.

Yea it just so happens that the trust were successful in their campaign to oust Jenkins a few days after he defied the Americans over the Dan James saga. Yet no criticism for the Americans who were obviously instrumental in getting this guru out.

Come Resolven your mask has already slipped on this one by stating that he "fell on his sword".

Grow up and accept it was the Americans that got rid of him.

Monk took Swansea to the dizzing heights of 8th and was by no means a disaster. Guidolin was also very decent. Bradley was clearly recommended by Donovan who was the US owner's advisor.

HJ has no reason to question his judgement. He was not an expert ion US football. At the end of the day the US people were in charge.

One of the great post from the Trust was their approval of the fateful Clement appointment who had that invaluable 'inside track' on Sanches. Carlos inhetirted a demoralised squad and very nearly pulled off the great escape. Take the knocks and get back on the horse.

Football is a competetive sport and no team the size of Swansea can have 20 consequetive years of sucess. HJ gave the club 14 years of growth transformed the club and had it back on the right road with Potter.

The achievements of the SCST include the building of a strong legal case to give the current owners a serious head ache. You know the ones that have lent the club £5m- £10m to get them out of a serious Covid hole. Lets see how that goes. Even The Chief seems to be losing hope and patience. 4 years and counting.

I was being ironic. I look forward to them going to court and winning their freedom from an unhappy marriage. Like 99% of divorces there will be no way back.

What they will do after that is not exactly clear.

I think they will try to forget about the whole thing and keep kicking the can down the road. They will be say "possibly next week" in 5 years time. I want them to be either positive investors and a positive group in harmony with other owners or completely out of the way.

The best 'cop out' route is my suggestion of an independent review of their strategy of both legal action and future financial objectives given their apparent limitiations in investment options. They could publish the report like any good democratic group would do.

The objective will be to make money and have funds to buy the club back off the adminstrator in the event of other owners ceasing to fund the clubs debts.

The be of use as a 'protector of the faith' they need to cash in in the Premer league and invest in something that protects them from inflation. A target of a 5% holding would be sensible and using cash to maintain that holding as the club grows by natural inflation. This means inflation in ticket proceeds TV revenue and player valuations.

By maintaining the 5% holding they will be active investors helping the club as a whole and providing funds for development and growth of the club. If the club goes on a downward spiral their exposure will have been minimised and the worst that can happen is that the 5% holding is lost.

This is my advice but do not listen to me listen to a business strategy expert who can determine the best way forward once he or she understands the objectives of the SCST. Some time volunteers need help.
