And in Wales in the quarter-final at Ninian Park east German referee Rudi Glöckner took centre stage. The game saw a dubious penalty to the Yugoslavians, a missed spot kick by Wales, two Welsh goals ruled out, and Glöckner threaten to abandon the match as he was pelted with coins and full beer cans. Evan a policeman was speared with a corner flag as ugly after-match scenes erupted. In the aftermath Wales were banned from playing in their own capital city.

I was there and it got nasty a few times near us but not with others who could stand up for themselves. I saw a woman with a Yugoslavian hat that was ripped off her head. She had pinned it in place and it took chunks of hair with it. Obviously a family who were scared to death and attacked by cowards. |  | | |

Outside the ground walking up and during the hames there was a fair bit of 'ow's your father' (perhaps carrying Swans scarves may contributed!) that stopped during the riot … then carried on on the walk back to the centre. | |
