| Reading points deduction 20:21 - Sep 21 with 544 views | KeithHaynes | Negotiations between the Royals and the Football League are understood to be at an advanced stage, with an agreed sanction close to being finalised over breaches of financial rules. It is reported by The Telegraph that Reading, currently 14th in the second tier standings, are facing a potential deduction of six to nine points, which will drop them into a relegation scrap if, as expected, the punishment is applied later this season. Along with Derby County, Reading are in discussions over the EFL’s regulation 85 in their sanctions, which allows both parties to strike an amicable settlement and avoid going before a disciplinary commission, meaning Reading have to agree on a future business plan. In July 2021, it was announced that the Berkshire outfit had broken the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules. They were then were put under a transfer embargo, which set them back to only being allowed to sign free agents and loans during the summer window. The rules don’t allow clubs to exceed losses of £39 million over a three-year assessment period, but it seems Reading’s accounts have breached that amount by a huge number. | |

Its funny on how the smaller clubs get a arse kicking, but bigger the club the more of a slap on the wrist they get, those brown envelopes must be bulging.

| Reading points deduction on 20:35 - Sep 21 with 488 views | sP7qupUf | I don't get this "in negation". The EFL just need to slap the penalty on. It is like going to court having committed a crime and negotiating the sentence with the judge. Penalty should be the same for all clubs who commit the same offence. Nothing to negotiate. | | | |
| Reading points deduction on 20:47 - Sep 21 with 444 views | Catullus | Depends if it's a civil or criminal matter doesn't it? Anyway, I tend to agree about the punishment for breaching financial rules, there should be a baseline punishment for those who narrowly break the rules which increases for every so much more you are in debt, so 12 points for up to a million and then and extra 1 point deduction for every extra million? A 10 million breach would mean a 21 point deduction before any other sanctions. | |

The Oil Sheikh has friends in high places and plenty to offer them maybe? Lets face it, why can Barcelona still be functioning when 1 billion in debt when a club with a fraction of the debt gets heavily punished. Why can Man City seemingly do as they please? Football revolves around the money and the big clubs have the power.

Real Madrid, Man Utd are heavily in debt, but they can manage their debts, surely that shouldn't matter, as its still debt. Seems that way to me, but I don't know how it all works, its probably a minefield of this, that and the other.

The EFL isn't so well-run that they have a clear list of punishments matched to offences covering every eventuality. And if they dish out severe penalties on a whim then member clubs will challenge them on it. Hopefully some precedents will be set soon though.

Presumably with Reading and Derby cash strapped they cannot afford such people. The negotiation is designed to get an agreement to keep the lawyers away, I would think.
