What happened to Nu & Xi? 10:07 - Nov 28 with 785 viewsbritferry

All our Greek experts out there will be asking, why they skipped 2 letters when they named the new Covid variant?

They didn't use Nu as it would have been the "Nu variant"

They didn't use "Xi" coz they didn't want to upset the Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who manufactured this bl00y thing in the first place.

Omicron sounds more like a bad guy in a 1980’s cartoon.

You're thinking of the Meekon in the Dan Dare comics.

It is an anagram of MORONIC, which is what the media response was when they had no facts.

Omicron is the 15th letter in the Greek alphabet.

The WHO's best practice for naming diseases suggest avoiding “causing offence to any cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic groups.”

While Delta was the previous ‘variant of concern’ before what is now Omicron, the WHO has been naming less serious ‘variants of interest’ also using the Greek alphabet.

Isn’t using the Greek alphabet offensive to Greeks? Or is it discriminating against every other type of alphabet? We could use the Welsh alphabet and have a Ll variant but everybody saying it would probably spread the virus more as there’d be more airborne particles of spit and mucus everywhere.

TLR could you please stop introducing facts to the thread as it upsets the snowflakes. Thanks.
