| Grass roots rugby in Wales 20:58 - Feb 5 with 1276 views | magicdaps10 | Before I talk about it, I have to add that Saturday league grass roots football is no better but the academies with links to other other academies and league/premier clubs in England cover a lot of negligence at the Saturday league level. Onto Rugby, it saddens me to see the state of grass roots Rugby.......if Welsh rugby wants to improve then this is the starting block. Something needs to be done here before future players are lost.

Where we live ,junior rugby sits comfortably alongside junior football . No competition here It’s either rugby or football. Massive football area obviously but the local rugby clubs attract plenty of kids

The underage grades(not all) that I have experience with is very clickey with coaches being made up of parents, some teams have nearly double figures with coaches......ultimately seeing their kids get preferential treatment and kids who are as capable or even more.so put to one side. We all know where this leads to........lack of confidence and losing the love of the sport. There needs to be a major upheavel in grass roots rugby. I must stress, it's not all areas but it certainly needs a shake up in many places in Wales.

Welsh Rugby Union has been too concerned with beers and the boys, rather then having a meaningful strategy for player identification, best facilities, and top coaching. The regions have very clearly struggled financially and on the pitch for a decade.

Luckily be married to an Irish gal(have I ever mentioned that 😉) I have some sort of knowledge with sport in Ireland. Rugby is the fastest growing sport in Ireland, unofficial records in Ireland suggest that there are now over 100k players over there and growing. Gaelic football is by far the most popular sport over there and kids play it from a very young age and the physical side preps them ready or those who move over to Rugby. Understandably due to risks the game has gone softer down the age grades and Ireland have that upper hand with regards to that with gaelic football having very little to me restrictions down the age grades.

Parks rugby in Wales will be gone within 5 to 7 years tops. I prompted and featured in a BBC Wales news report over 20 years ago after I estimated that there were no more than around 17,000 rugby players in Wales then and numbers were dropping like a stone. Despite a very quick flurry of attention in the media lasting a day or two the rugby powers to be did nothing to address the situation other than to carry on with their freebie trips around the globe to watch the international team. It's too late to reverse the situation now and local rugby will shortly cease due to lack of playing numbers. Those still quoting the thousands of youngsters playing and training on a Sunday morning as evidence of a healthy future appear to be oblivious to the fact that a negligible percentage ever go on to play adult rugby. BTW parks football is disappearing as fast as amateur rugby. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
