The ex Barnsley centre back has been a target of the Saints and Russell Martin for a few weeks. It has been mentioned that this now rules out Nathan Wood after a second transfer offer for his services was rejected by Swansea City yesterday afternoon. 0 Unsurprising, click above.

| Saints signing Holgate from Everton changes nothing on 09:16 - Aug 26 with 1652 views | RichardO | The sale of Piroe must put us in a stronger position with regards to the sale or no sale of Wood who having two year left on his contract and given his development must be one of our most valuable assets. It has been stated that he had a stuttering start at the club but given both him and Darling were being introduced into the team very quickly I thought they did well after a shaky start and the team went on a bit of a winning run with Wood playing on the right and Manning in a more defensive Wing Back role on the left effectively going to a back four up and NOT playing Ntcham and Paterson together which offered a bit more bite but still allowed enough quality, until the first Burnley game where injury rotations meant a similar winning line up was never really tried again effectively until very late into the season. Think Wood really needs to be kept as I think with more defensive aware and capable WBs Wood, Darling and Cabango can be drive forward from the back if they have players in front offering more options. Against Coventry those options seemed limited until Ashby pushed forward early and the ball got played forward correctly and we scored. We will concede goal in open play but it seems we are a better defensive outfit now but need to show more composure not making rash decisions, not giving stupid penalties, not dropping off a player who is in a dangerous positions to cover areas where perceived danger will be. At set pieces trust people to their jobs. Some players seem to be trying to hard and end up getting in each others way. Early days but do think given the money brought in, better to keep Wood if possible. | | | |

If its true that there is a possible 10million on the table, he's as good as gone and if its 10mill up front I'll drive him myself for a nominal fee

Funny how the grass is always greener somewhere else. There will be money to be made on Wood but it should be a the right time for us maybe in 6 months or a year but things might have drastically changed by then, we have done the selling bit, do we now need to sell or do we keep on trying to improve the squad we can't keep offloading players, especially to teams we are in direct competition with.

He wants to go, what can we do, offer him a bigger contract? If we do that we'll have other players knocking on the Coleman's door demanding more, I just hope that Adams and Armstrong leave Saints and they crash and burn, still haven't got over them winning down here and sending us down, when Hughes was in charge.

I’d be tempted here. It’s pretty obvious we’re looking to rip up Martins team and let Duff and Watson build their own. We’ve spent a fair bit by our standards, but this would take us over £25m between Wood, Piroe, Ntcham, Joseph, Whittaker and Obafemi. We’re never going to spend it all, but it’s a chance to give Watson more money (I assume) than he had at Luton and see what he can do. We’ve had too many ‘transitional’ seasons lately, but this really feels like one.

If a player is has a two year contract and is of the right quality and we look as if we have covered most of our expected problem positions and sold to a degree which put us in a good position financiallywhy would you carry on selling your best assets looking at unproven, inexperienced centre halves when you have already got one who at times in the right team/setup looks a more than capable one. I myself was looking to maintain as much of the positives from last year as possible not rip it all up and start again. I do expect Wood to leave sooner rather than later but I would to get the top price for him, did we sell Dan James at the right time maybe by more luck than judgement, yes, do we really need to sell Wood? Maybe Wood has taken offence at some of Duff's comment thinking his position is in jeopardy once he is back playing and the window closes I'm sure we would see him back to the form he has shown last year. Just hope it is not with other team. We will know more if he is included in today's team.

I can't help thinking that the problem of players wanting to leave increases when we sell almost any player who does well. Any rising star may well conclude that there is no chance of promotion with us.

But a great opportunity to earn hundreds of thousands of pounds more and move on. Even Duff mentioned this as a reasoning for coming to Swansea 👍

Increasing the overall quality of the squad may put other ideas in peoples heads, to determine if it has, needs for the window to close so the manager can concentrate on the games.

Good points there, but I just don't think we can compete financially with a fair few of these Championship clubs. I think that unless we get lucky and mange to get a good cohesive squad together to sustain a decent push towards the playoffs and maybe beyond, midtable top 10 club could well be our lot, its about where we are at the moment with the size of the club and our geographical position.

We were not far off last season, if our run started one game sooner.......

I think he probably just wants to go to a bigger club and get paid more. I agree about maintaining last seasons positives. I was expecting evolution, this is definitely revolution.
