A man who suffered appalling spite from the WRU and one revered deeply within the games of RU and RL. I wouldn’t be surprised if fireboy had come across him at some stage

When I went to internationals in the 60s ,the chants were “ Watkins ( east wales ) Barry John ( ( west Wales ) Who was greater? Down to conjecture but both highly talented and legendary although BJ hated that tag . Watkins talks on pre professional Welsh rugby ( ludicrously labelled amateur) were really enlightening .

Was targetted in league because of his height 5 .6 . But also because of his price tag . Broke his nose 4 times , fractured jaw and ribs in first 2 seasons and got no protection from refs. Makes it all the more remarkable that he achieved what he did.

Thats because he was a tough nugget, every code hopper got a bit of treatment, most of them succeeded because they were tough men themselves even before they moved up north, working class boys who could look after themselves.
Eventually they gained respect from their peers, especially Dai, I don't need to bang on about good he was, his record speaks for itself.
Some say he was better than Barry John, Gwent types nearly all say he was better than Barry John, Turkish types say Barry John was the best. Dai Watkins brilliant career and will be missed by people of both codes.
