Always emotional. Personally, reminds me of ANZACS being loyal to our friendship. Volunteering to travel 10000 miles to a slaughterhouse then having to deal with Japan and it’s horrors in the Jungles Thanks
My Dad's friend at school joined the merchant navy at 16 in May 1940, he could not wait until he was 18 to join the armed services. On his first posting as a deck boy on an Atlantic convey his ship was torpedoed. He survived and swam to the U boat when it surfaced, he was pushed back into the water by the Germans and was lost. His case came up in the Nuremberg trials as part of the evidence to prove that the Germans were systematically killing people that it could have saved. Each year I go to a Remembrance Service on behalf of my Dad who never got over the loss of three school friends from Manselton in WW2. None of them made it past 18.

Good man. I’ve always thought the Navy was arguably the worst gig mainly as you’re a sitting target We lived next to Manselton school Last time I was home, it was deeply upsetting to see the old girl abandoned. My father went to the seniors there and I the infants

My father told, late in his life, three very sad stories about three different boys from Manselton who lost their lives in WW2. Thanks to the internet I was able to find all three and accounts of their demise, my father's recollections were incredibly accurate. I won't name the boys out of respect for their families, all three stories tell of immense bravery, like many others of their time.
I used to work with a gentleman ( in the true sense of the word) who served in Burma and was captured by the japanese, , he carried mental and physical scars to his dying day. They were called the forgotten army because they were.

It was a very tough theatre of war, but it’s where the japs suffered their biggest land defeat

When I read about the war against the Japanese, I'm reminded of that Mel Gibson film When we were Soldiers, the brutality of that film was unbelievable I believe its based on a true story as well, which was no doubt even more brutal. The true horrors of war.
Just looked it up and found this -
"We Were Soldiers is a 2002 war film written and directed by Randall Wallace and starring Mel Gibson. Based on the book We Were Soldiers Once… and Young (1992) by Lieutenant General (Ret.) Hal Moore and reporter Joseph L. Galloway, it dramatizes the Battle of Ia Drang on November 14, 1965."

Reality worse than we could imagine matey
I said to my Mrs while watching it that there was a guy there placing a wreath whose body language was all wrong . He looked as if he didn't want to be there - turns out it was The bald Stephen Flynn parliaments SNP rep. I found out because this morning in one of the papers it was pointed out that he didn't sing the national anthem . A disgrace to all the brave Scottish heroes who died for this country in 2 world wars.

Talking about the far East I once watched a documentary on the battle of Imphal .That , let me tell you was horrific , pure nonstop attacks from 30 yards away by the Japs , night and day . I think if I remember rightly the Japs were trying to overrun a tennis court at the top of a hill held by the Royal Gloucester regiment ! It was voted Britain's greatest battle by the national army museum in 2013. I used to drink in a pub where an elderly local taxi driver popped in now and again . He was very unassuming , reserved . I only found out later that he had been a member of the chindits in Burma and had been shot through the hand in a firefight with the japs . You should never underestimate the quiet bloke in the corner.

The battle of Imphal / Kohima was ( the regiment no longer exists due to amalgamation) a battle honour bestowed on my old Regiment , Royal Welch Fusiliers , a story well worth reading about , such tales were repeated throughout out the campaign some successful some not so.

Not sure what your point is. Doesn't Scotland have the SNP?

I am mistaken it was the West Kent Regiment not the Royal Gloucesters who held the hill . A very bloody battle nicknamed the Stalingrad of the East.
controversialjack you are right the Indian soldiers played a huge part as did the Gurkhas

I went to the service yesterday, took my 6 year old son.
I keep meaning to wear my beret but never felt right doing so.
I decided I shall wear it next year.
My late father in law saw real action in the middle and far east. He didn’t have a beret, never went to any ceremony and only told me once about what he saw. I have a relative who served for 4 years, didn’t see any action and never left the Uk. He dresses up every year and does the full ceremony thing. Each to their own i guess

Maybe just maybe the relative who never left these shores was paying respect to those who did and was thankful that others died instead of him .Of course you could ask him

He’s perfectly entitled to do what he likes, just as my father in law did
