| Sheehan latest plus Harry Darling as Lewis O’Brien is ready to return to Fores on 20:11 - Apr 29 with 2711 views | GVJack | Thanks for the report. 750k sign on fee for Darling doesnt seem unreasonable, he'd most certainly get that+ elsewhere being a free agent and it would cost a reasonable amount more to get a player to come in with his experience and expect to split seamlessly into the starting XI so maybe him resigning isn't out of the question as I first thought. As for O'Brien - it states in the report that official negotiations can't be done until the window opens in June, I thought deals could be done at any time but only completed with the move occuring during the windows (but I may be wrong)? | | | |

No I understand we can't discuss anything with the player. But does that stop even official negotiations with Forest to come to an agreement? [Post edited 29 Apr 21:25]

I would say we already know exactly what terms O'brien will agree. If we are happy with those it all comes down to a transfer fee. Personally I don't think we are prepared to pay the required wages.

Clubs can only officially talk during transfer windows. That includes the player, he is under contract until 2026.

Will he get a remewed contract with Forest if not would he and Forest be happy to let him comeback next season, he may cost more or will Forest look to offload him in which case would O'Brien look to comeback or will quality dictate cost and benefit to be gained by Forest.? I think he was more affective playing the deeper role instead starting further up the park but what was patently obvious we lacked anybody of better quality to play the linking role further up the pitch while being of value defensively. Even as the No. 10 his movement off the ball.was excellent always trying to create space for himself and others even dropping deeper when needed to do so.
| Sheehan latest plus Harry Darling as Lewis O’Brien is ready to return to Fores on 09:00 - Apr 30 with 1906 views | jack247 | O’Brien is the perfect example of the loan system used correctly. To put it bluntly, he’s a level above and improves the performances of those around him. Sourcing players like that on permanent transfers is difficult, because there are always going to be bigger, richer clubs interested. If we do manage to sign him, he’s going to come at a premium. Sourcing players like that on loan is comparatively easy. There will be plenty not quite breaking into PL squads who would stand out down here. If the deal proves too costly (as I suspect it might), I’d have no issue with us looking for a similar player on a season long loan, it’s exactly what the system is designed for, not padding the squad with Sorinolas and Nelson Abbeys. | | | |

Agree with regard to O'Brien and loans but those loans also need quality players and a structure of play around them. Last Season I thought Patino was a good loan but the quality around him did not help, did he make mistakes yes but so did Guehi at times previously, Patino was made a scapegoat for the lack of quality around him si did Congreve on his full debut after being subbed early the game, discarded never to be seen again, not exactly the way develop players on as coaches. That happened to a number of younger players under Martin. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Guehi had a different attitude to patino, he tried his hardest and obviously worked hard in training as after a shaky start he became a class player for us, whereas patino showed glimpses of how good he was but was very lazy when we didn't have the ball, he obviously hasn't learnt as he hasn't pushed on.

Guehi had 18mths with us under Cooper who knew what he was cspable of, Patino had Paterson alongside him making us good going but forward poor in defence, The same could be said about Ntcham and Paterson pairing made us defensively weak in the middle of the park as they liked to push forward. (Not comparing Patino and Ntcham one had played at a standard the other a relative novice)

Patino was lazy and had his head turned by a Latin lover and was never the same again.

Sourcing, yes agreed there’s a lot out there. Getting them to sign was a very different story though and very costly. O’Brien was an excellent well researched spot as was Delcroix and Widell. All from the same ‘scout’ for want of another term. Which tells me the system is very much improving.

No doubt and that ties in nicely with the point I’m trying to make. As much as we’d all love O’Brien here, he’s already at a PL club earning much more than our players. If our scouting system is much improved (and it certainly looks that way), is the better move to break the bank for a player who is a bit of a game changer, or to source a similar type, either on a season long loan, or who isn’t already at a big club on big wages, like Widell?
