I completely disagree with the concept of a political Police and Crime Commissioner, politics should be 100% kept out of policing which should be completely independent of any political allegiance or influence.
That said, the new arrangements, whatever they look like must be robust and hold the police to account for their actions and performance. If that’s a Police Authority type arrangement so be it, but it has to strong and robust.
In terms of the salary, given the nature of the role. I wouldn’t call the salary eye watering, the South Wales Commissioner is on £88k while the Dyfed Powys Commissioner is on £68k, that’s not a huge amount given the sizes of the organisations they’re overseeing. Primary school heads can earn more than that. | | | |

That makes sense because it gives the government time to make alternative plans for the governance of the police forces. They’re going to need to prepare legislation, consult, bring it to parliament and the House of Lords for voting on etc etc.
It’ll also prevent us shelling out on redundancy etc.
Whilst the Home Office is a joke, I do not for 1 minute support the devolution of policing to the WG, t needs to stay part of the existing structure. [Post edited 13 Nov 23:28]

Yes, you are correct - it's around that figure in my area - the figure that appears on the breakdown of our council tax contributions is not only the salary of the PCC but the total associated costs of that position. [Post edited 14 Nov 6:12]

It's not just that salary, it's that of their deputies and administrative staff.
A complete and unnecessary drain on resources that should go to front line policing.

There will be some savings, but they aren't likely to he enormous because some of the functions PCC’s undertake will still need to be carried out by the body or individual tasked to replace the PCC.
What’s important is that there are robust mechanisms in place to oversee the police service which are not controlled or influenced by politicians. Policing needs to be independent, but it has to be accountable which is what the PCC’s are supposed to do. [Post edited 15 Nov 6:40]

I agree with you, unfortunately the tone of policing is set by the College of Policing and HMIC who are in effect an arms length Home Office. Where we are now is a direct reflection of the last 20 years of government policy.
The type of Chief Constable you are looking for are few and far between, the accelerated promotion scheme and PNAC (or whatever it’s called) are geared to produce what the politicians and mandarins of the day decree.

Unfortunately police are having to be social services as are most of the public sector.
Regular posters on here know I work in schools and over 50% (conservatively) is spent on social work type activities. | | | |
