There can be advantages to booking a package holiday as they provide better protection in the event that things go Pete Tong.
If you book the flights and 1 night at a hotel then becomes a “package holiday” and regardless of what you arrange for the rest of the trip from what I understand the whole trip is then considered to be a “package holiday” which attracts the extra protections. Booking separately can become problematic for example, if your flight is delayed and it affects car hire as losses won’t be covered.
It may be worth exploring the mix and match approach.
Texas is huge, we had friends living in Dallas / Fort Worth and they never went in to Dallas as the centre was sprawling and busy to drive in to. When we went to downtown Dallas, they got one of their friends to take us in because they wouldn’t drive there themselves. San Antonio was great and I’d defo recommend. |  | | |

The river walk in San Antonio with its restaurants was very nice, albeit the prices in some of the places are a little steep. The Alamo is also in the city centre, but further outside there are some quite well preserved missions which were similar to the Alamo before it was destroyed. Great place for mariachi music.
There is a large tower near the grassy knoll where JFK was assassinated, it was home to a radio station and you used to be able could go up to the top for a butchers at the Dallas skyline, I’m not sure if it’s still there but it’s defo worth a look if it is. [Post edited 1 Aug 1:06]

Interesting to hear people's experiences of the present situation. I remember amazingly cheap Florida Fly Drive deals from over 30 years ago, which you could tweak by driving up into other southern states. There were also inexpensive Vegas Fly Drives. Years later I used to take advantage of cheap charter flights into Toronto and get a discounted car hire though my brother's employer. Often a trip would involve crossing into the US, say New England or Chicago way. However, all the cheap deals seem to have gone now - I can no longer get the low company car hire rate and accommodation below 100 US$ a night is harder to find. When I have looked in recent years at arranging similar driving tours with multiple motel stays, the price is quite steep. Now I fly to SE Asia instead. [Post edited 31 Jul 10:34]
