Les Ferdinand: QPR director of football stresses club must be patient

Queens Park Rangers must be patient as they seek a return to the Premier League, according to director of football Les Ferdinand.

The R's, relegated from the top flight in 2015, are 13th in the Championship, four points off the play-off places.

"We know what we are trying to achieve and where we are trying to go," Ferdinand, 49, told BBC Radio London.

"We are in a society where everybody wants everything overnight. Sometimes that doesn't happen."

QPR finished 12th last season, having sacked Chris Ramsey in November and replaced him with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Rangers were in the play-off places at the start of September but have slipped to mid-table following a run of two wins in nine league games.

"We started the season well and everyone was optimistic and enthused by that, but unfortunately there has been a downturn in performances," Ferdinand added.

"If you are going to gain stability or continuity at your club, you need a bit of patience.

"I know that is difficult for supporters at times but it is vitally important we keep a level head about it all."

Hasselbaink 'the right man' for R's

Rangers' previous spell in the Premier League, from 2011 to 2013, was characterised by big spending on transfer fees and player wages - such as the £12.5m signing of defender Christopher Samba on a reported £100,000 a week.

Following relegation in 2015 Ferdinand said the club's strategy was "badly wrong" and he is keen to stress the R's - and Hasselbaink - are now working under tighter financial constraints.

"At this moment we are not in a position to throw that sort of money at players," Ferdinand said.

"There has to be a period of stabilisation at the club. That is the period we are in right now, frustrating as it may be.

"We'd love to be in the position where we could throw the money that was thrown before, but we are not.

"We brought a young manager in from League One who we felt was the right man to take the club forward. We still believe he is the right man and everyone is backing him."

Still, the experience is lacking and the championship is not the place to cut your teeth. That said, I feel more comfortable that he has Hoos alongside to nurture him.

he has almost 2 years of experience now

Yup, and I'd also like to know; why and on what basis he got the job in the first place?

He got the job because TF was once again getting shafted by his manager that he appointed and didnt have the know how to sort it out.
I agree with you honneywood that the failings at QPR point to Fernandes but i wouldnt blame Ferdinand. I think he's done ok

So you turn to someone with no experience whatsoever of sorting such matters out?

Well Ferdinand did sort it out. He stopped the signings Redknapp wanted who than went on to jack the job in stating his knees couldn't handle it anymore.
I think Ferdinand was the obvious go to man at the time because of his QPR connection and I guess his experience within the game.
I think TF hasn't been honest with Ferdinand with how he wants QPR to be.
In a season where consolidation was the buzz word ,TF actually said "promotion means everything" which undermined both Ramsey and Ferdinand. I think the sacking of JFH again shows that the two of them (TF,LF) are not really singing from the same hymn sheet.

For what it's worth I think les has done well as DOF , we are slowly getting there as a club , we wanted young players with potential and youth players and we are getting that
The problem les has is the problem we all have being QPR fans is Tony fernades sticking his beak into things, all of this garbage about play offs and wanting Prem football totally undermines what les is trying to do , if it was down to calamity tone we would still be throwing money around on average players , we desperately need the training ground sorted and a proper academy yet tone is obsessed with the premier gravy train , it's down to him that in 5 years we have neither
Jimmy was a good appointment but he let him self down with his style of play and negative tactics
The football and atmosphere was horrible
I get the feeling that TF wants clement and les wants sherwood this could get interesting

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

"I get the feeling that TF wants clement and les wants sherwood this could get interesting"

Well if that's the case I hope TF gets his way.

I don't want Sherwood but I'd suggest if Fernandes thinks it's a good idea then it probably isn't the way to go. Fernandes should try the George Costanza way and do the opposite of his insticnts
