Firstly apologies if this has already been covered .I was there yesterday. I admit my thinking skills were slightly impaired on account of time spent in the Rutland and the journey up but why are we bringing Smith on. I can only assume it’s a last roll of the dice in the hope that he connects with cross. He’s served us well but can’t really cover any ground.

I don't understand it either. Doesn't suit the style the team plays atm and Oteh had been great in the Leeds game.

I don’t get this have a go at Smith malarkey, let’s get it right he was out top goalscorer last season and in general was good and gives everything for the shirt, people on this forum love putting players or ex managers down when we improve (Washington, Mackie and Holloway spring to mind) yes wells and hamed are better but they are not our players and next year more than likely won’t be here also we are playing a different system than last season smith is not suited to a lone striker role a hamster can work that out and anyway what’s smith supposed to do when he is given a token 5 minutes here and there
When clubs are blowing 6 million plus on the likes of Ashley Fletcher and Gary Madine be thankful we have a player who cost buttons who is twice the player of those mentioned

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

My angst is not with Smith but with with the way he is being used as a sub and the way we play with him on the pitch. He needs to be in the box, with crosses to attack and this rarely happens. When it does refs just give fouls against him. All very predictable and discouraging.

Got to the point with Smith now where I'm resigned to us not scoring once he comes on. Nothing against him as he clearly tries really hard, but just doesn't offer enough of a goal threat. Would rather have seen a more creative player like Oteh given a cameo yesterday, the game could've done with his pace

I have to agree with that, I thought Oteh would have been given a run out, Smith is a great pro but as stated, no longer suited to our style of play.

I like him. He's got less movement than spasticus autisticus Crossroads Sandy with a kinder egg of opioid analgesic dissolving up his arsehole, but he was superb for us last year. What the poor f ucker is meant to do with 5 minutes of football every other week christ only knows.

You might as well throw on a yucca plant as an impact sub rather than Matt, but sling that fackin' ball in the mixer , and Matt's your man. Good Geezer.

to be fair smith isn't brought on to chase, cover back or run like bolt, he is there to get on the end of a cross, if none go in, what can he do? wasn't there yesterday , did we get crosses in? sounds like it was close, tense, tight game.

A great servant but just can’t cover the ground. Also he doesn’t fit into this fast paced one touch game that we try to produce.

i particularly love it when there's a corner in the 94th minute and Smith comes on.

I hear this:

Beast in the air but offers nothing else really. Should be the second striking option off the bench.

When he comes on we should be getting balls into the box and bodies around him, when we did that last season he was very effective. We've not had many games this season where thats been needed from the bench but do think games like yesterday and Reading at home we didn't play to his strengths at all when he came on

This.

He doesn't deserve any criticism at all, PaulParker is dead right, especially about his scoring record last year, but we don't seem to be using him the right way.

I agree. The guy can score goals. All well saying he doesn't suit our way of playing. If you bring him on change it, stand him 6-12 yards out and give him crosses to run onto. It's not fking rocket science. He scored quite a few last season that way. If you can't score pretty goals muscle and bundle them in.

But agree. Smith goes from top scorer to zero because we don't play to his strengths and you play to a goal scorer's strengths and change the formula.

Or, as others say, if you can't, don't waste his career like this and bring on Oteh instead.

Never knowingly right.

not sure that it's really a dig at Smith as we all seem to know what his strengths are and have appreciated his ability when we play to those; he was very effective at times last season and seems a really genuine guy.

Mc swaps him with Wells or a.n.other and doesn't appear to change the style/formation to make use of him. I feel sorry for him running shuttles between the 2 centre backs when he simply doesn't have the pace and mobility to do that. When we have pacey youngsters that are performing in the U23 it seems to make sense that they are more of a like for like. Against the likes of Boro when defending a lead his aerial strength (moreso defensively of late) is handy to have.

When he came on at Villa a lot of balls went in high but even those he won we didn't really have anyone to really feed off of them; that's not blaming him, just probably a misuse of resourses & tactics.

totally agree with your comments regarding budgets, costs and the going price for a bang average CF in today's game though.
