Just remembered Aidy Boothroyd is in charge of the u21s. Explains how a team so full of potential has suddenly lost its way so badly. Not a great deal of confidence, belief or joy in how they are playing. It’s embarrassing how little he is getting out of such talent that he has available to him.

Embarrassing but not surprising With all this talent we have it’s a shame we don’t have a Dave sexton anymore , The u21 manager should be the one who takes over Southgate it’s a waste of time having this dinosaur ,because will never be england manager why not let the likes of Cowley, bowyer, Parker do it on a part time basis with a figure head behind them like a peter Taylor , glen hoddle or Steve coppell

Good points. I have no idea how Boothroyd lucked himself into that job. They had it right with Southgate doing it - and that worked, so why have they employed this bloke?
Wouldn't let Hoddle anywhere near it though. Bit baffled by all the love for him. 98% of players who played under him hated him. Bit late for Coppell and Taylor now, too. But like the idea of a younger manager, part time or full time, assisted by an elder statesman. As you said, Sexton was perfect for that.

Little bit worried about the England youth set up going forwards. We've come so far so quickly under Dan Ashworth, we're now producing first team players and winning tournaments despite the struggles for first team football in the Premier League. Compare it to ten years ago under Sven and McClaren, same old guard making same old half arsed mistakes.
But Ashworth has gone to Brighton now and been replaced with les Reed, who oversaw a big decline at Southampton (went from producing JWP, AOC, Bale, Lallana etc etc to, errr, Sam Gallagher) and basically seems to be one of those networkers who keeps getting into good jobs despite a poor record and lack of ability. It's a joke that Boothryod is anywhere near the U21s, and even worse they're pinning his huge underachievement with a talented group of players on the players themselves - accusing young lads of being arrogant and basically chucking them under the bus rather than looking at the manager who is notoriously awful.
Michael Calvin's excellent Living on the Volcano is a must read on football management anyway, but the chapters on Boothryod at Northampton and how he went about it go all the way through laughable into deeply depressing.

I'd get Eddie Howe to do it. Seems more in the Southgate mould.
I can't imagine that he would leave Premier League management for an under 21 role & I would expect that the Buurnemouth job would pay more than double!
I can think of one man who would be far better than Boothroyd, but I'm biased & don't want Chris Ramsey to leave Rangers!

I'd forgotten that, maybe because there is so much other stuff in the book about managers just scraping by. I just re-read the chapter and there is definitely a touch of the John Sittons about his half-time team talks at Northampton. There is also the pathos of the manager who feels he is not respected because the owners are always looking for the next manager. At the time of the Calvin book he seemed to be in the middle of an identity crisis about what sort of manager he was and what sort of football he should be playing.

On the plus side, in Saturdays Wembley programme it was detailing a lot of the coaching appointments that have arisen recently. It appears that coaches move up with the players as they get older, for instance Justin Cochrane has just moved from the Under 15 team to the Under 16 team as they've changed age group. This must be a good thing in the long run.

The classic example being good old, safe, wouldn't say boo to a goose Ron Greenwood being picked in 1977 over Brian Clough.
