Sorry to post a contribution from another Forum Clive, but I thought this a nice illustration of the improvement we've made.

Excellent points made Dave. I must admit at the time I was happy with the McClaren appointment. I guess I was wooed by his knowledge of us post Fulham and thought Holloway could do no more. I fully expected MCClaren to continue the great development work that Olli had started but clearly that didn't happen. The only thing I can say in his defence is that everybody totally lost their sh1t after the 7-1 hammering at WBA and the 3-0 home loss to Bristol City, which may have coloured his 'vision' and made him opt for 'warriors' like Hemed. We are a fickle bunch, if the 4-0 home collapse to Forest had been greeted with the same meltdown as the WBA match, would Warburton have been able to carry on with his project? Both second half performances were equally abysmal, the only difference was that when they occured Warburton had points (and credit)in the bank, whereas McClaren hadn't. Perhaps a better comparison was when we were 1-0 down at home to Wigan at half time and heading for our third defeat in a week, the natives were already getting restless. Fine lines...

It wasn't all bad under McClaren, we got that win at Forest, we got through 2 rounds in each of the cups, had a few clean sheets and were quite high in the league around the end of November, I think.

However, the second half of the season league form was diabolical, considerably worse than this season where we had a six game unbeaten run prior to lockdown. Of course as has already been pointed out he also ignored most of our younger players and overplayed others and as a result they lost form and he also overplayed older players who subsequently got injured.

Warburton has achieved considerably more on less money.

Good post. Very reasoned.

Also, maybe there was something to Eustace's comments to the bosses and the incoming Warburton that many of the players switched off once we were safe? Hence the clear-out.

We had a cracking mid-season under him which involved a great Christmas run which we're normally bad at, a first ever win at Forest the same time and multiple cup wins.

It was the appalling start and appalling end that made it a bad season to remember.
