What was your first experience of football violence/crowd disturbance. and did that first experience have an effect on you.....not being involved, but as a by stander.
The first was at home to glasgow rangers, pre season friendly in 1969, as an 11 year old it was pretty hairy, and although not very violent in the ground, the atmosphere was intense. outside though plenty of trouble, in later years i've learnt that west ham and tottenham fans were there for trouble. it did have an immediate effect, one terrified but excited the same time, but that was when i was nearly home after.....just to add, 3 of us all 11 year olds went to the game on our own, from sutton esteate off north pole road.
First away experience was at leeds in 1973, 2-2 draw. we went by football special, 400 on the train in all, in them days everyone was a target, wearing your colours or getting caught out by your accent. we had trouble at the turnstiles before the game, no segregation, and lots of leeds fans in what we now call the away end. coming out was even worse, hundreds of leeds fans waiting outside to pick you off, and a few did get caught out and beaten up....thank god for the green buses back to the train station.
i took my son and his cousin (both 13) to this one, and although my son had been going since he was 6, it was his first encounter with trouble at football, my nephew on the other hand was terrified as we were seated in the upper loft near to that hole in the fence/ellerslie road where the pompey came through.
My dad was going to take me and some Rs lads from school to this game, but got called to work last minute so we had to skip it.
I've never seen him look so relieved in all his life!

Mostly this thread is making me glad to be the age I am.
The only trouble I've had was at Ipswich away a few years ago when we won 3-1 (play off winning season iirc).
Had a lovely day, locals had all been dead sound - about 7/8pm me and my mate are in the chippy and see a load of blokes had followed us out for some reason. Still gutted I never got those chips.
They followed us all the way to the train station ("F**k off back to London" - err, yeah, we're trying lads) and they pushed us and gave us the auld "come on then" - but like they were all 20 years older than us and every time I saw how wired their faces were all I could think was how utterly pathetic they were. Fighting over football, how tragic imo

I wasn't at that Portsmouth fixture and have heard three different accounts of the day. WTF actually happened? Been told they bought tickets for the Ellerslie, also told they found a hole in a fence, huh!

My understanding is that there were a lot of them in R block which was juts general 'open' area then and they got into the upper Loft through a hole and that's when it all kicked off.
Upper Loft was predominantly a family area and you had R's fan simply protecting their family. I think some of them ended up in Court when they were simply doing what any Dad/hubby would do yet it was them that got in trouble and not the Pompey fans who caused it. Ridiculous.
I believe it's how R Block became the R Block that it is today.

this my take on that day. can't comment on the incidents in sar where it also kicked off. i was sat in pu/nu whatever that corner is called up in the loft. a little pompey firm plotted up in the block of ellerslie road next to the loft. from ko all they done was goad and gesture to the qpr singers next to the fence which had a hole big enough for bods to get through. they chose their time to come through just after half time, with drinkers still in the bar, and the few that did come up, half fled and a few chose to stand and fight. my two youngsters, both 13 were terrified, especially the nephew who never been to a match before. it was all over after a couple of minutes.

Was very good friends with Ron Bunyan (RIP) who used to be the steward on the main entrance.
Ron said that one day, when we were playing Everton, it all kicked off in South Africa Road a bit further up from the ground when some of theirs got a bit lairy. The next thing he saw was one of their's being chased back down the road by a couple of ours. The Evertonian was heading for the main entrance to seek refuge but when he got there he was that terrified he didn't wait for Ron to unlock and open the door but ran straight through the glass....
They sat him down and, luckily, apart from a few cuts from the glass, he seemed relatively uninjured. It was then that they noticed a terrible smell and realized that, not only was he that scared he had run straight through the glass, but he had also completely soiled himself....
Not so lairy then was he.....

The first time I went to newcastle was via a National Express coach which dropped off and picked up from the Gallowgate bus station. There wasn’t a problem before the game as the coach got in about 2pm,but the return coach didn’t leave until 5.30,which meant hanging around the bus station for a while. Unfortunately one of the locals knew how to read and tell the time,so him and his mates tried to pick on me and this other qpr fan who had been talking to the clever kid on the walk down from the ground. We both ended up sitting in a police van for 20 minutes until the coach turned up.They were only teenagers but there were enough of them to give us a pasting easily.And I didn’t fancy the idea of messing up my looks any more than god has already done.

dunno if i'm unlucky but had issues outside arsenal, at millwall, at home v pompey 82, we won 5-1 they had 5000 up i was 15 and got kicked up loftus road, until one of them went "leave him he is a kid" cheers mate! forest in the paddock, saw some bad scenes after the fa cup final v spurs , they were bullies imo at full time, blades all over the place....i suppose it comes down to rivalry, brizzle,cardiff, pompey, millwall, stoke then london games and the day....always rucks at grimsby, a lot v lootown too. hull when the "bomb" taunts nearly caused a mass riot, i have never seen qpr straight fans so angry and fences nearly tore down after. chelsea used to trun up 10k handed, few could stand up to them numbers, hence our hatred of them now, they won't do that again.

Night game a Charlton in the 80's. Ended as a draw I think. After the game a load of Rangers fans were queuing in a Chippy when a big Chartlton brute comes in, punches a kid with a QPR scarf on in the face and runs out. The kid must have been all of 13.
Got turned ove after a game with Man City one afternoon. Was walking back home through that dog-leg alley that leads to Frithville Gardens when I got jumped by four of five City fans. Was only a few yards from my parents as they lived in the block of flats opposite the alley entrance!

Never seen anything much down the Rangers during my days.. Went to a Juventus v Brescia game at the Stadio Delle Alpi.. Think Nedved scored..were up in the gods and don't remember a whole lot about the game, but do remember before the game we was wondering around the stadium and were suddenly in front of a group of ultras..all hoods on and scarves covering faces running towards us, at first though they were running at us then a coach passes by and a dozen or so Brescia fans suddenly kick open the emergency door and stream out out throwing bottles and bricks... Police got involved pretty quickly and we got out the way.. but was quite an eye opener.

Worst I've seen at LR was Millwall in the league cup in the 80s. Kicked off all round the ground at half time (seemed pre arranged) and they were randomly whacking people at White City afterwards. That was the first leg and only a couple of hundred Rs were at the away leg at the old Den which was scary. We backpassed our way to a 0--0 (won the home game 2-1) to go through, driving the home crowd nuts in the process, and what seemed like the whole ground was hanging around afterwards keen to congratulate us outside. We were kept in for ages while they cleared out the home terraces.
Worst seen anywhere was at Chelsea in the early playoff days where a first division team was involved against a second division team. 40,000 there v Boro. I was in the Boro end purely there to see the scum get relegated. Chelsea won 1-0, but it wasn't enough after losing the away leg 2-0 and down they went. All hell broke loose afterwards. Chelsea fans couldn't get to our end so then turned on the police. Full on riot style stuff. Some of it is on youtube, but it doesn't come close to doing it justice. Bad scenes.

Did a favour for a Luton supporter at school and was at the notorious Luton v Millwall game in the 80s. First ever neutral game and didn't go to another for about 20yrs!
Getting coins lobbed at you from the penalty box was not enjoyable and I convinced mate to leave early. Got stopped by Millwall fans on way to station, 'You Luton...naw I'm Rangers mate' which confused the knuckle draggers.
Great story for school next day but was fecking terrifying at the time.

I was at the Millwall game too. As I had my motorbike jacket on and buckled boots I didn't look like your average football fan so as I was walking to my motorbike 'wall fans ran past me like I wasn't there. Same get-up helped me at many away games.

I was up towards the back of the away end so probably out of range. Does not surprise me in the least though. It really turned unpleasant at the end. The Chelsea fans in the benches were piling into the police big time.

Was very happy to get away from there that night. Was expecting a couple of thousand Rs being a London derby, yet there was hardly any of us in that away corner terrace.
