Just heard Slippy G bemoaning Liverpool getting a soft penalty and Villa denied an obvious one.

Oh the irony!!

KARMA!

Ch3/5ea, Liverpool and Man City all getting game winning penalties today. Man Utd next.

Had a good chat with Holloway once about the FA cup game up at old trafford. I’m not into all that big club ref stuff however after witnessing the ref giving us nothing and Ince going around doing what he wanted that day I did wonder. Ian also kindly showed me a pretty big scar on the top of his foot that Ince gave him in the first few minutes.

Now four 'big' teams getting game winning Pens with Ronaldo spot kick for United at Norwich. 3 of 4 correct decisions for Man U, Liverpool and Chelsea. All were clear fouls on VAR. Outlier was handball call for Man City which was absurd and followed incredibly harsh sending off for Raul Jimenez. Works in most sports...big stars and teams get the calls.

If teams with a lot of possession who have clever attacking players who run at defenders in the penalty area, it’s a reasonable case to get penalty’s. Last week I watched Fred leave his leg in waiting for the challenge. On VAR all day long, in manipulating the situation absolutely.

The root of the problem is the consequence of a foul or handball in the penalty area is such a huge contribution to the outcome of games. That’s what needs to be examined.

I don’t think the sending off was harsh, but I question whether a home player would’ve sent off in the same circumstances.I think we’re all sick of players trying to stop a quick free kick being taken, and it’s about time that refs clamped down on it.But what we need is every player doing it to receive the same punishment, especially when they raise their leg to block the kick.Very rarely do the refs give a yellow card for the same offence.

I’ve just seen the Liverpool penalty and the first player moaning in the refs ear was Ashley diving Young.Great stuff to see him on the wrong end of a dodgy penalty.

Gerrard was at least partially correct as no way was Liverpool's penalty legit. Salah threw himself to the ground ( not for the first time either) once he felt the slightest contact from Mings. Mings had him where he wanted him, on his useless right foot. The only mistake he made was putting in a challenge at all, as Salah was going nowhere.
Allison's challenge on Ings wasn't a penalty either, although I wonder what would have happened if it had happened at the other end of the pitch

The first yellow card was a nonsense but after receiving it, to do what he did was madness. Remember Clarke Carlisle getting sent off against Crewe by Andy Hall when the Crewe player seemed to kick the ball at him before he had backed away 10 yards leaving us with 9 men fighting for a 0-0. Steve Palmer in the midfield certainly put in a hell of a shift that afternoon. Sad thing was, we'd have gone up automatically in 2nd if we'd won that match and the Cardiff playoff heart ache would have never been. Tommy what's his face would have had career.

I agree about the 1st yellow card being ridiculous, but knowing that you’ve received one,he should’ve left it to a teammate to stand in front to avoid a quick free kick being taken.Similar to what West Ham did to us in spreading the yellow cards around in 2012.

I think the Crewe game was the year before the playoff final in cardiff. It was Crewe who got promoted that season and the 0-0 at our place ensured their promotion. But I could be wrong on the year, but I thought it was our first season of three in league one.

The 0-0 with Crewe was the year of the play-off final, as mentioned that result cost us our shot at 2nd place.

Our first year in League One/Division Two we finished 8th but never really troubled the top 6, I think we just finished the season with 4/5 wins in a row to end up that high.

Sorry mate I just googled it and you’re right about the year, but they finished 3 points above us with a much better goal difference,so unless we’d won 6-0 we wouldn’t have finished above them.

No way was the sending of Jiminez 'harsh'.

We've all moaned on here about players delaying tactics.

He had a long conversation with the referee about the first yellow (for pulling shirt, breaking up promising attack , followed by a kick), told to move away from the fk, remained 1 yard from the ball, stuck his foot out and blocked the ball once the fk WAS taken, about 90 seconds, at least, after the foul - harsh????!!!!!!!!!!!!

Telling that Mings didn't argue though?

That's a pen for me.

you’re reffing by a book and not in the reality of the situation.

Maybe a yellow, maybe not. Lack of consistency the issue here as we see this happening higher up the pitch with no yellow. Too much subjectivity and vagueness in the laws.

Very hard to say that is a promising attack when Man City in their own half and Wolves players behind the ball. It is the defending CF tackling the CDM in his own half.

For me the ref can do more to manage the situation, walk him back, delay the blowing of the whistle until he has moved, give yourself and the player some time to reset. It is also quite clear to see the Man City player is playing to get him booked (is that not unsporting?) as he strikes the ball in his direction at a strange height for a short pass.

All that being said, there is enough there to be two bookings but it could have gone a different way with some very simple game management.

the Wolves sending off should be a lesson to all players in their levels of stupidity.

possibly a borderline harsh yellow for challenge, but to then blatantly obstruct teh free kick and think he'd get away with it; utter bellend.

if a few more refs took this attitude to that kind of game management, including the kicking away of the ball, then things would improve very quickly.

Madison for Leicester yesterday with similar tactics; left a leg in/ran into opposing player.

VAR pass go card and a nice easy lead. Being a defender it irritates the hell out of me how easy it still is to win a penalty despite VAR and the game allegedly being a bit tougher this season.

Nope not having that - its not a yellow if the Man City just blasts the ball at the Wolves player - he doesn't do that, he tries to take the free kick and the Wolves player sticks his leg out!

The first yellow he grabbed his shirt and when that didn't work, he kicked him - not sure how you can be happy with that - its a yellow all day long for me.

This is player stupidity x 2, clear and simple, to 'blame' the ref here is ridiculous IMHO.

Looked soft didn't it, but no protest from the defender?!!!!!

Sadly it seems the 'professionals' accept this as being OK and therefore a pen, Glenn Murray thought it was on MOTD 2 as well.

The yellow card is debatable and the laws don’t help. For me it wasn’t reckless, more careless, and as I say, hard to say it is stopping a promising attack.

20 seconds between the showing of the yellow card and the free kick being taken IS enough time for Jimenez to move but even Moss is getting back into position by walking backwards and he could have managed the situation by talking and walking Jimenez back, he doesn’t have to do this but he could do this.

By just holding up the yellow and not talking to the player about it, doesn’t help and has played a part in escalating the situation.

The problem of posing an objective argument with a subjective set of laws is a flawed one. Winning would be learning from the situation to improve it next time rather than trying to prove the unprovable.

I presume you mean the player should learn from it?

10 year olds know you can't stand 1 yard from a free kick, to say the referee has to 'manage' a PL player to do the same is absurd.

Why is expecting the referee to manage the game and players absurd? Surely that is their job?

Maybe it would be helpful for the ref, player and manger to discuss the incident a couple of days after the game? It could be much more helpful than pointing fingers and blaming each other. What does that achieve?

I do have an update tbf to you from RefChat, but first I have to say the Wolves manager agreed with the 2nd yellow (Not the first) but surely that tells you everything about that one?

On the first one Man City had two players cautioned for SPA, just before so you could argue that consistency WAS applied.

Now for the counter argument from RefChat - some thought Moss didn't handle situation well, and that as he hadn't signalled for restart, he couldn't caution.

I'm reporting that as I always try to be fair - have to say though its about 90% - 10% on RefChat that the player is at fault here, including a Wolves supporting referee!

You can often see players playing for the penalty. Waiting for the slightest contact to go down as though shot.

The problem is that their are many situations where by the letter of the law you could give a yellow card, but they let many of them go as otherwise you'll end up playing 7 a side.

The amount of times Man City foul an opposition player after losing the ball to prevent a break without getting a yellow card is ridiculous.
