I know there's a few of us on here. Would be interesting to know what you're up to (as opposed to this just being a lot of youtube vids of good guitarists).
What guitars do you have? What style do you play? How do you practice?

Matteo is amazing but I sort of hate his style of playing. When I was a kid learning to play I had real guitar heroes who not only played great stuff but it was accessible, you could actually learn it even if it was hard, and it was cool. It existed in songs that I liked.
Matteo and everyone else are just there on YouTube creating an arms race of guitar technique. If you're 13 now and that's the standard, it has to be demoralising. The first time I saw Hendrix on TV I was blown away but I recognised it all as normal guitar technique.
These c**ts are doing tapping on acoustic guitars. You ever tried to tap on an acoustic guitar? It sounds like shit. But their videos are edited and the sound is tweaked. Good luck ever getting close to it. And what's the end goal? You can't use this shit in a band.
It's like how you used to get those football trick guys who could do 200 keepie-uppies off their scrotum and have to ball come to a perfect stop on their chin or whatever but they never played actual football because the skills didn't translate.
I respect it but it's not helping guitar playing in the long run.
I remember donkey years ago we saw a band called Ten Years After supporting John Mayall at the Marquee. The guitarist, Alvin Lee, played at blistering speed which drew applause but after a while became tedious. Hendrix said of him “he's a clown, should be in a circus”. Bit unfair really but relying on just simple stuff played really fast isn't really on.

We saw TYA at Reading Uni, I thought Alvin Lee was great, both his slow and fast playing.
Everything Is subjective of course It Is, I was just glad to see and hear the famous Red 1958 Gibson ES-335 being played 'live'.
My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

The only time I saw Alvin Lee was on Night of the Guitars which was a concert shown on TV in the 90s. Alvin Lee, Pete Haycock, Randy California, the guy from the doors, Leslie West. It was alright.
I've posted it here before no doubt but it's the best thing from that night and one of my favourite guitar performances. Pete's playing is so tasty.
It's much harder to play than it looks. Always gives me trouble. And I've not even attempted the solos.

I agree that technique can detract from the actual song and while impressed by the playing, I'm not so keen on tracks which are just one big melting pot filled with mind-bending solos and stellar tricks.
You could perhaps say that the band Earth - see below - are close to the opposite extreme. More or less every note played by both the guitarist and the drummer is nurtured and cherished. There's so much feeling in it.
"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Then you have the absolute extreme end of that spectrum. Sunno))) - saw them live and they played one note for an hour, slightly detuning it now and again. I know people who love them, but easily the worst band I've ever seen.

Got to be honest, I don't mind Earth and Sleep, but Sunn O))) were a difficult watch for me live. Not for me either!

Cropper was the antithesis of lots of the speed merchants already mentioned. Lovely clean tone, perfectly phrased and timed riffs, masterful use of a chop. He was like a good ref - did the job so unobtrusively well you might not take a lot of notice but when he's not there everything goes to shìt rapidly.
RIP

Seconded. Got me thinking about those ‘under the radar’ types. David T. Walker is one of my favourites…

Interesting!
That reminds me of something I once read about the pioneer of electronic music, Klaus Schulze. He had an orchestra - or perhaps it was just a string section, for reasons of practicality - hold the same note...for ten minutes!

Sylvia still sends shivers down my spine after all these years….
Just taken me back to the Oval, 30th September 1972, there, Colin: Focus (with a cameo appearance from Jack Bruce), ELP, Genesis, Argent, Wishbone Ash and, er … Fudd. Another world.
