Despite all its obvious flaws I thought that VAR was there to try and make things fair and also for me take away the perceived and not without good evidence the bias refereeing towards the bigger clubs. Once again last night, in the last minute of injury time a major decision made by the on field ref which was then backed up by the VAR ref was so obviously wrong that it was totally embarrassing.

I remember many, many years ago when I was a young man watching QPR getting a terrible decisions against the 'big boys'...At Liverpool (Les Ferdinand getting a second yellow for time wasting at Anfield when QPR were losing)... against ManUre, Eric Cantona scoring in the 8th minute of Fergie time at Loftus Road (back when games never had 8 minutes on injury time), Shaun Derry getting sent off/giving away a penalty at Old Trafford, in the first couple of minutes for farting near Ashley Young... This is how it has always been and always will be for the bigger clubs.... VAR, retrospective reviews, witch hunts on tv .... wont make a jot of difference.

I’d like to hear the reasoning of why it wasn’t a foul.

I look forward to anyone going up for a header now being fair game to be smashed late by an opposition player and play being waved on as there was no clear and obvious foul. You can even use your arms apparently. Just rugby tackle him in the air.

It was so obviously a penalty I cannot think of why Salisbury didn’t tell the ref to look at it. What did he see?

Also interested to see where Salisbury pitches up next. A few weeks off and then…?

Really bizarre you wouldn’t advise the ref to take a look. Hard to conclude it would have been the same decision the other way.

Goalkeepers have always been over-protected (see also the goal not given for Everton) but in this era of being more conscious of concussions you’re effectively saying goalies can still punch someone in the head, clatter into them nowhere near the ball etc.

Oh well Jon Moss has apologised. That will cheer up the people travelling 200 miles on a Monday night.

Again, its not a VAR problem. Its not the technology, its human error or incompetence.
What should happen now is that the person on VAR last night gets a two game ban and has to be taken on a course of why that was a stone wall pen and why it should of been at least referred back to the on pitch ref..

The interesting thing here, that football hasn’t had to face up to yet, is corruption. What measures are in place to ensure the VAR official hasn’t take a bung to influence the result?

We’ve long since accepted that on field refs don’t and it would be harder to get away with it. But in the VAR studio, you’re not in the action, you don’t have to face consequences and yet to you can have a big impact on the result and a number of betting markets.

I don’t know much about it, but for those that do, what sort of measures do the PMGOL and Premier League (and EFL) to prevent corruption of referees?

Ref would give a pen straight away, probably wouldn't even bother with VAR.

Embarrassingly bad decision

Should retrospectively award Wolves a goal.

Appreciate it was only a very good chance to score but that decision should be called out.

Man Utd - first home game of the season - hanging on - injury time.

Its actually cheating and we need to be aware every time this happens and the reasoning of the decision makers and it being held to account because for me the only logical conclusion to such a blatantly obvious incorrect decision despite the advantages of the VAR to make a more comprehensive assessment is corruption.

It's the same all over Europe, Celtic, PSG, Bayern, Real and all the rest always seem to get the tight decisions their way. It's funny that isn't it? It's almost like the authorities wanted the BIG teams to win! The only thing that's funny is when they play each other in the Champions League and they can't understand why the close call has gone against them!

I'd quite like to see something like they have in American football or tennis, where coaches can have 2 or 3 challenges per half, but only for serious decisions. So in football I guess it would penalties, red cards and maybe some.otger things I'd not thought about.

This would mean VAR would avoid 'missing stuff' like the 2 pens in the Playoff final last year and other stuff mentioned above, coaches can't complain if they don't challenge etc. Doesn't stop things being reviewed anyway without a challenge.

I can understand infield refs missing things, but there is no excuse for some obvious VAR non reviews and some of those really should be looked into more.
