Couldn't see an existing thread on this. Apologies if I've just missed it, as work has been extremely full on recently, hence my lengthy absence from here apart from the occasional pop-in.
This is WELL worth a listen, as I think listening to the Chief always is anyway.
A lot of it we know already to be fair, but there are some interesting new revelations which I'm not going to spoil by going into detail on here. What I would say, though, is you should definitely listen right to the end, as he makes specific reference as to why we haven't seen him inducted into the Forever R's Club yet. Given the amount of games he played for the club and the fact that he was basically the only constant through 6 1/2 years of complete chaos and madness on an epic scale, I've long felt this was a ridiculous oversight. There is a ray of hope shone on this injustice by him at the end of the podcast to be fair.

Very interesting from the context of a fans forum where topics are debated based upon different interpretations of what has been read and heard. When someone with first hand insight, who is eloquent, balanced and widely respected, shares information it should put a lot of the debate to bed.
It sounded to me that he had a lot more to say, he did well to keep it on track. He would be a great interviewee for anyone really looking to get to the heart of what has happened at the club over the last few years. | |

Whenever I hear Rednapp in an advert it makes me completely despise the man more so.
How he treated the injured Ale Faurlin and Ned's treatment are not virtues these large multi national companies surely want to project their image.
Loved Nedhum's book, this guy comes across as 100% genuine.

Yes, but Onuoha has been retired for three(?) years now & I think is back living in the UK.
On Ned's own podcast when he interviewed Ale Faurlin, he revealed that Harold had said good when he was told that Ale had suffered his third ACL. He was also upset with the club about how they parted ways with himself, Faurlin, Hill etc. As were many of us!
My only real criticism of Ferdinand was how he dealt with renewing/releasing players at the end of their contracts. [Post edited 11 Sep 2023 10:06]

He actually says in the interview he's been invited back to Forever R's this season. Some players who have played more than him who have not gone into it yet. 3 years after retirement is about right really
Always 2 sides of it. Was a really good interview but can't say I agree with some of his complaints.
I get what he's saying about the last contract he was offered but the club were trying to comply with FFP and couldn't give him the same contract anymore, club did the right thing imo of course the player expects more money and may think he deserves it but club couldn't risk points deductions etc. he seems to only see it an an insult to him rather than looking at the bigger picture. Charlie Austin had similar complaints but was again the right thing to do.
The C Club thing, the players had their own bar they have a bigger one now, why do they need to go into the C Club as well which they are charging a fortune for? That seemed a bit petty to me on Nedums behalf. Imagine if the players went in there every week and starting getting stick from fans. [Post edited 11 Sep 2023 11:39]

Basically he said the players bar was tiny so they asked the club for the players not picked to go into the C Club and they were told no. Before one game he went to the C Club and was denied access, asked someone to let players in going forward and he got a letter from Rueben the next day saying players can't go in. Nedum always comes across as thoughtful and considered with what he says. His book is an enjoyable read too and I look forward to welcoming his return to LR.
None of what he said in the podcast surprised me greatly, our club is an expert in ruining its own chances. I reckon he should've got the final year of the contract too. |  | | |

How credible is Onouha? He goes on about how clubs and ownership put out spin, and thats surely true.
Having said that, I recall he said he was leaving QPR b/c he wanted to be closer to the North (only to then take a gig in Utah)

Good interview. Always refreshing listening to Ned who is far more articulate, insightful and intelligent than your average footballer.
It's not comfortable listening, but shouldn't come as a surprise. We all know the club has been/is a mess, no point pretending it's not and no point getting upset about it,especially when it's coming from one of the few players who didn't take the club for a ride.

It's not comfortable listening, but shouldn't come as a surprise. We all know the club has been/is a mess, no point pretending it's not and no point getting upset about it,especially when it's coming from one of the few players who didn't take the club for a ride.
Increasingly, Holloway's second tenure is looking a lot better. Seems he's a more astute manager than his persona suggests. |
Agree 100% on that last point, Joe, although I suppose you could effectively say I'm biased given how long I've known him and Birch.
That said, I have always found him more than happy to debate any counter-argument you put to him (often for a VERY long time - no surprise there..).
When you listen to his co-commentating, I think that's when it really comes home to you exactly how deeply he thinks about the game and has a deeper understanding of individual players and how they tick than many people give him credit for.
He's always said that his most successful year in management to date in his opinion was the year he kept us in the Championship when we beat Forest at home on the last day. | | | |

It wasn't 100% clear to me exactly n what proportion he put the blame, but Fernandes definitely gets a fair wodge of it thrown at him by the Chief for basing all of his main decisions on what the Twitterati were throwing at him in terms of demands and criticism, and for the reckless ego-boost spending spree in the early days of his reign.
Ferdinand cops it to a degree for sanctioning the recent trolley dash which has left us in our current predicament, and interestingly NR is convinced we'll sanction another one should we get anywhere near the play-offs in the foreseeable future. | | | |

On LF, he questions why, when we are supposed to be a development club, we sign players like Johansson, why under his watch we appointed different types of managers, why, unlike Brentford, for example, we don’t have an identity etc. He questioned how the likes of Brentford and Luton can succeed where we can’t.
On Fernandes, he spoke about judging him on what he said when he arrived and what he actually delivered.
He said he liked Amit personally but has no experience of him professionally which is pretty damning for the longest serving Board member / Chairman.
Re his last contract, he said one year from the end of the first contract he re-signed on 1/3 of the salary over three years, so swapped one year’s salary for three years stability. That contract included an extension trigger which was triggered but the club said they couldn’t afford it. They then offered him less, on something similar to his first contract at City when he was 18, plus appearance bonuses. He accepted it was a lot compared to a normal job but a significant pay cut. He felt the appearance bonus was too risky because the club could just not play him and he’d just be a ‘training player’. At 28, looking at his last contract, having played over 200 games for the club and always having been healthy and available, he thought they offered him a contract that he could never accept just to get rid of him. He accepted the club was cost-cutting but then said they signed other players on better contracts so what they were offering him wasn’t a new ceiling.
The way he and Ale left was mentioned.
To me, he basically confirmed it’s the shambles it obviously is.
All in all pretty shoddy, but nothing surprising. As I say, it felt like there was more to be said with an interviewer capable and prepared to ask the questions. | |

To be fair to Ned, he did say quite a few times “this is my interpretation..” “happy if others see it differently/challenge me” or similar. But I do agree, that in the interests of balance and fairness it is good to get the alternative angle.
I found myself agreeing with a lot of what he said about how you treat people. So, the giving of the “hairdryer treatment” on the pitch these days, especially to a younger player is not right approach according to Ned. Can understand a bit more about the Derry, Hill and Barton clique that seems to have developed in recent years. They were all old school and would have grown up with the verbals and likely treated all teammates the same way. Think Ned had the awareness that you need to treat people differently, especially the younger generation or you don’t get buy-in from them. As such he was a decent captain during the period we were trying to develop players.
Bits on Steve Mc were interesting. Can sort of understand why Tony F got a hardon for him after that first stint as he basically did everything we wanted from a Manager. The total reversal to what he did when he actually got the job.
Would have liked Finney to have asked him a bit more about Nedum the player. Always thought he was a better centre back then right back and wondered whether he thinks that set him back having to fill in there for us. Never thought he was one of our best but thought he was decent enough and likeable character. All in all enjoyed the interview and reinforced my views of Ned as decent and articulate player. | | | |
