I never got to see Stanley Bowles play, but I know the legend and have heard from my dad how what you see on the TV doesn't do him justice. I have been lucky enough to see Taarabt and Eze, but they left too early for me to be fully invested in them for ever, although I still want to see Eze do great wherever he goes.
In my lifetime, I guess the closest I have had are Sir Les (the player) and Martin Rowlands, two great players in their own way who played with us for a while, but not the maverick who could pull crowds in on his own (or the proverbial, I would pay to see him play).
I hope we have another like him one day, but sadly I doubt it - not many stay that long and even fewer are allowed to be gifted and mercurial today. A legend - I hope for those of us too young, we can soon have more! |  | | |  |

Simple answer: no.,
Stan was from an era where many clubs had players of outrageous talent, all of whom were 'characters' off the pitch as much as they were on it.
Mavericks like Frank Worthington, Rodney Marsh. George Best, Charlie George, Tony Currie, Alan Hudson and so on, were players born in the immediate aftermath of WW2; which knew real hardships, and they only had football to console themselves growing up. So soon after the swinging 60s, this crop of mavericks then had money in the 70s and a world that had massively changed during their young lives. Frankly, they just enjoyed it!
Now, I suspect such talents would be groomed, coached, and managed into tight team structures, that unless their individuality offered above the median line delivery in Nourryspeak, they'd either learn to adapt or be out on their ear.
The likes of Stan might not have had to play against supremely fit and conditioned opponents, but they did have to play against: thugs, often on quagmires, with medicine balls when wet. The fact they shone can only make you wonder what they would have been like if allowed to develop in the modern game.
Stan's era has gone. On the list above, little QPR had three of those, we were blessed. Rodney might have started it, but Stan made the '10' synonymous with style and the ability to get you on the edge of your seat (no mean feat at LR).
Many have been hailed (Stainrod, Wegerle, Byrne, Eze, Chair) but they fall short despite being very good footballers. I'd say only Adel really comes close, and that was for one season only in the second tier. However, even then he's not that close because where as Stan and his ilk turned up and performed week-in and week-out, with no resting, or tactical subbing (Stan's era only one sub allowed) Adel's temperament was ultimately his undoing. |  |

I agree, Taarabt is the closest we will ever get to Stan
Both extremely talented
Both 150 games + for QPR
Both scored sensational goals
Both divisive characters (I still can't believe some of the criticism Taarabt got and gets)
Eze is extremely good, and who knows for future however unfortunately his best years are at Crystal Palace rather than us!
Players like Rowlands (mentioned earlier) and Faurlin are other QPR esque legends but completly different to Stan! |  | | |

Adel is hands down the best "modern era" player I have watched in the flesh on a regular basis.
He could've been an all time great on the World stage and we all know why he didn't fulfill that and that's all about his head not his feet.
Eze a class all round act.
However the era for "Stan types" sadly gone as football now a sanatised, souless and largely robotic game (see why Adel didn't hit the heights of Messi) |  |

I suspect it says more about both Stan's and Adel's character flaws, rather than their natural ability, that they stayed with us rather than being snapped up by bigger clubs.
Eze didn't have those flaws and was sold for Stg20m.

I don't know how many times I saw Stan, maybe only two or three but really once was enough to appreciate his talent. The first time I saw him play he managed to retain the ball from a prone position, which even as a callow youth I recognised as something special.
I went to see Adel as many times as I could because it was clear that he was another very special talent, probably potentially as good as Stan. But as said above, Stan did it at the top level for a good number of years and despite all the narrative about his maverick/roguish character, all that really relates to off the pitch stuff, on it he couldn't really be faulted in any way. |  |
