Off to Budapest early May for 3 nights with the missus and appreciate any hotel / Air BnB recommendations, places to go, bars , restaurants etc.

Just back mate - my wife is half Hungarian so we get over when we can. It’s a wonderful place.
We’ve stayed in a few hotels. Mecure City Centre last time as despite liking a walk, it’s central and avoids taxis. It’s a decent place, clean and the rooms are good.Got an upgrade, somehow, so don’t know what we would have had. There is building work around, not in, the hotel. Emailed them and they kept us away from the noise.
Things to do: Buda Castle, food market, evening Danube cruise when it’s dark.
( go on the unlimited Prosecco trip - good spacious boat and around £20) Also, get on the trams. Routes 2 and 49 are apparently the best. The hop on/off bus isn’t as good as it was but you will see an awful lot of the city.
The choice of Restaurants is vast. Always best to pre book if it’s rated on tripadvisor.
Last time we ate at Dionysus - Greek, Vicky Barcelona - tapas and the Italian next to our hotel. All really decent. Hungarian food for lunch, as it’s a bit limited. Hell’s Kitchen is decent - off Vaci Utca - the main central street. Anna’s Cafe is a great place to watch the world go by. Always packed.
Exchange rate over there about 440 Forints to pound. Very straightforward and easy. Do not pay in euros if you have some knocking about, you’ll get done.

As above but also check out the ruin bars, amazing places with great atmosphere.
We did one of the walking tours, guide was an English girl (History Teacher) who had married a Hungarian lad. Loved the place, also look out for the small statues dotted about the place by a Ukrainian artist.
We stayed at the Intercontinental on the river front, great location. Was by the ‘shoes’ on the riverfront which is also an installation worth taking in. | | | |

Transport is easy. There are trams, the quaint historic shallow underground, the deep underground, buses, trolley buses. overground trains and obviously taxis all very competitively priced. The Art Deco buldings are impressive as Budapest is knpown as the Paris of the east. Pest is like Paris's left bank as it's more cosmoplitan and then there's the Ecseri flea market too on the outskirts of the city. In summary ,a great place to go. |  | | |

From memory districts 5 and 6 are very well located. Went in 2016 and loved it there.
We stayed in a lovely 2 bedroom apartment in district 5. Very well located a short walk to shops, restaurants etc, many attractions and terrific value for money. That particular one isn't advertising any more but there would be loads of similar options. There are a lot of nicely renovated apartments in older buildings for rent. [Post edited 17 Mar 23:40]

I'd reiterate what MickS said about May being hot in Budapest.
I found that the smart thing was to treat it like a Mediterranean country - get up as soon as it's light, go out and do something touristy (most other tourists won't have got going), have a nice lunch (food, wine and beer all excellent) then have a bit of a doze somewhere cool (Margit Island was good for that) maybe with an ice cream, before going out in the evening.
Too long since I've been there for recommendations I'm afraid, when I was there Victor Orban was the great hope of the liberals and his party was mainly made up of students. | | | |

One of the most, if not the most, hard right-wing countries in Europe, but, that aside, both sides of the city has a lot to offer. I'd be avoiding tourist season, which it sounds like you mostly will be. |  |

Meanwhile back on topic, went to Budapest for a few days with the lads in 2015 and the Ruin Bars were (then, at least) fantastic - hope they haven't been, er, ruined since by tourism etc.
There was also a fabulous kebab-style resto/take-away, "Gyros", half way down the hill from our favourite bar. For 3(?) successive nights I visited on the way back to hotel at around 3 or 4 in the morning - solid food was a life-saver.
Anyhow, out of curiosity I went back again during the day when sober(ish), and amazingly the food was every bit as good!
(Also was in Budapest for a few days in the 80's i.e. before the Berlin Wall fell etc. Everything was grey and totally crap.) | | | |

When I was there we had a fabulous Airbnb with a balcony overlooking the parliament and square which we used to sit on for hours at a time. There was a protest anti Orban group who used to set up in the square and get cleared out by the police every so often and we spent some time talking to them.
When we were EU citizens all bus tram underground and boat travel was free for over 60s in Budapest . Yet another of life's pleasures that we have stupidly renounced.
Despite this it is a marvellous city. Visit the market and check out the holocaust memorial of shoes on the river bank. | | | |
