The thing I noticed about the fifth goal was how our man actually pulled out of the challenge on the edge of the box allowing a free hit on goal. It rather summed up the cowardly abject display of the whole team.

Of course the parachute money plays a big part in this league but we do surrender far too often against these sides the moment we go two down. The sheer amount of tonkings we have been getting have, in the most part, been against richer clubs or at least bigger clubs. We do seem to have an inferiority complex embedded in the club. I feel as though I should already be preparing myself for 5-0 defeats to Wolves and Burnley next season at least in one of the two meetings with each side.

I look at Millwall and see a club with limited funds like us but I can't imagine them losing 7-1 or 5-0 against clubs with big money behind them. They don't lose a game or two heavily each season like us. We make it so easy for the opposition at times. Not only do we suffer embarrassing big defeats like on Tuesday and early cup exits but we also specialise in not beating teams in the relegation dogfight.

It just rolls on year after year, decade after decade and nobody seems capable or wants to change it. Our motto should be shit happens, we simply shrug our shoulders and carry on as before. We simply exist to make up the numbers as though we are an amateur club in a professional league. I am viewed as a fossil for pointing out this club is dying on it's feet going nowhere because we need funds to change it like other clubs have done with investment over time.

I notice Middlesbrough have now gone off the boil so no doubt they will get back on track when they visit us and without Madsen I would suggest we have no chance. There is no way he will be back fit that soon. Our season will now fizzle out defeated by an injury crisis probably of our own making.

agree - this is very well put and quite sobering. I've been going to Loftus Road for 50 years on and off, and more on than off since returning from overseas a few years ago. And since then we've done pretty much bugger all - nothing in the cups obviously, and only the failed promotion push under Warburton that got exciting for a short while - otherwise relegation battles or the proverbial mid/lower table obscurity.

And I've just kind of accepted it. There's the odd highlight along the way of course (Jimmy's late winner against Brum a particular fave), but mostly it's either average or crap. And I haven't really questioned it, just accepted it, but your post is spot on. And it's making me really think. I'll be there on Saturday, but also can't be arsed with it. And I know others feel the same. I wonder how many more games (or even seasons) I'll sit through before the indifference takes over.

We treat it as a bit of an in joke about how QPR'd things get, about how typical it is for us to do these crap things. But we really shouldn't. it is unacceptable and has been for years and years. If only there was an answer or solution, but far better brains than mine have tried to crack it and failed. So maybe we are just doomed to continued underperformance and failure with the occasional bit of abjectivity thrown in for good measure.

That said, I guess I will continue going for the foreseeable......

There some truth to that, Mart. In the past, the internet knives would be out. These days there's more of a begrudging acceptance of such results and, in some quarters, excuses made. It's almost as if we've allowed our standards to drop, something that will not go unnoticed by the club.

For me the on-pitch issues (injuries, recruitment, etc.) is endemic of a wider problem; the lack of vision and creativity of our board. It continues to explore out-dated strategies that, even if they were to succeed, won't move the needle much. Applying analytics to an old strategy doesn't make it a fresh idea.

Whether we like or not, modern society has moved on and to succeed you need to embrace it with more creative strategies (such as those deployed by Birmingham and Wrexham). Indeed, the restrictions posed by PSR demands it as, bar a few exceptions such as infrastructure, rich owners can no longer spend personal wealth on their clubs.

I had hoped that one of the few advantages of hiring a young and inexperienced CEO would be that he'd bring fresh ideas to the table. However, that's proven not to be the case. Now that's not a slight on Christian's performance as ultimately he's an employee who takes direction from the board. Both boards (club and message) needs to pull its collective socks up. We need to be less accepting of low standards and the club needs to embrace and come up with modern ideas for modern problems.

I don't agree with all of this. Our owners/Board have made it quite clear that they are going to try to develop the club from the bottom up rather than buying multi-million pound players like Birmingham. I think, given the club's financial situation, they have bought quite reasonably and Nourry is trying hard to bring in players who will come through. You can't blame him of not trying to get young players who will potentially make it.

I do agree that we have struggled to crack what is needed at first team level for continued success but I don't agree with some of the comments about the club strategy.

That game was a truly miserable watch, a case study in how not to play football. Gutless, brainless, half-hearted stuff, almost devoid of quality.

One moment they build our hopes up, the next they smash them into a million pieces. We seem to have turned a corner, then promptly fall into a ravine.

I feel for everyone who makes the effort to go to see us, as well as those like Northern who relive the trauma as they chronicle our woes. Yes, it could be much worse, we're not in a relegation scrap, at least not currently, but it is utterly exhausting seeing all the sporadic flashes in the pan as the club scratches around trying different coaches, players and approaches.

Our Latin motto really should be alia tamen luce falsa: Yet another false dawn.

I'm repeating myself a bit because it bears repetition. At the start of play, we were level on points with them. Even now the debacle is over, we've still scored more goals than them at home, and have won the same number of games. To get a bit more granular, prior to playing us, they'd picked up a mediocre 8 points (2W, 2D, 1L) and scored a paltry 4 goals from 5 home games. So how does that result make sense? Somehow, however, and despite all the stats, we roll into town, and suddenly they're goal machines who look like Real Madrid.

In light of the above, what they paid for their subs bench is, if not entirely irrelevant, mostly unilluminating and, as I see it, just adding to the litany of excuses - which is strange to me in a review that thereafter (rightly and much more persuasively) attacks the culture of mediocrity at the club. That's where the thesis is.

We also went to West Ham, competed credibly, and were narrowly beaten. We turned over the top club pretty capably on our own patch. The injury situation isn't a red herring, but, at the same time, it's clear this is a team that did the business at Hull (who are seven points and six places higher than Southampton) with an identical level of squad availability. On which topic - I've never understood what it means to say to say teams are in 'artificially' high/low positions. Football isn't artifice, and, to dial a cliche, the table doesn't lie. Southampton are where they are right now because, regardless of their transfer payments and the size of their Prem parachute, they're mostly average. Hull are higher because they've been more effective. (Betvictor has them at 5-1 tonight to go up, with Southampton at 6.) We're a bit below mid-table because we're at the poorer end of mediocre, and seemingly aching to go on an awful run now we've all our excuses lined up like hooped ducks.

I think the main factors are the lack of conditioning, terrible lapses of concentration, and some kind of mental issue that JS seems incapable of addressing, coupled to a dreadfully negative set-up during too many away games. Nothing else can explain our ridiculous fluctuations from competitive and credible to inept and abject. It's not really injuries - as I've said, when we had a full complement of players to choose from, we were hardly tearing up trees. It's not really transfer fees - we've spent some good money on Kone, Edwards, and Saito ourselves, and the likes of Southampton haven't achieved any more than us this season - apart from this week.

I think it's far more down to desire, or a deficit of it. Fire in the belly. The bread and butter of belief. The players don't have enough of it, and the manager seems incapable of inculcating it. We win on Saturday, and somehow it's been a good week? Thanks for the merde sandwich, Julien!

So many good posts on here. I'm really adding to what's already been said.
This mentality that we can't compete 11 v 11 against relegated teams really irks me.
Just go and complete. We know when we were in that position that a lot of our players didn't fancy and I'm sure it's the same for these newly relegated teams.
The 3 game week thing is ridiculous now too. It's been a part of English football forever. Just play what's in front of you each game. The way we compete in some games it's pretty obvious that the powers that be have made it known that we can take our foot off of the pedal. It's no longer the sport I grew up with.
