Alan mcdonald on 10:09 - Dec 12 with 1213 views | daveB | He was very good although did have a few clangers in him. Personally thought other defenders such as Fenwick, Maddix and Parker were better players than him but Macca was one of ther old school warrior defenders who was very good over a long period of time.
Alan mcdonald on 13:14 - Dec 12 with 1111 views | LazyFan | Macca not only could head the ball, but he could also pass it. Long range diags? No problem for Macca. Sometimes he would even bring the ball out of defence and then pass it. Not to mention being a great tackler. He was similar to Van Dyke but not quite as fast as him, although better at passing. Goals-wise, headers from corners of course, but also long-range strikes, thumped home!

Alan mcdonald on 14:22 - Dec 12 with 1044 views | Juzzie | Agree with DaveB that Macca may have just been a fraction short of others but he more than made up for that with passion, dedication, passion, loyalty & integrity [(c) I. Beale] and passion too. I was at that 0-0 England v Northern Ireland game where fans were singing "it's a fix" at the end. No way was it a fix, Norn Irland worked hard for that draw. Got home and saw Macca after the game on the tv highlights, what a man. He wasn't a veteran either, I think it was one of his early games too. Didn't take any schit, but in the proper way. He wouldn't have stood for any team-mate antics the likes of Ronaldo, Neymar etc fk about with.

As a player you would adapt to what environment your in , Macca was from a time when you could get 4 fouls in before being booked

Man Utd fan (from Manchester!) work colleague came with me to a couple of QPR v Man U games back then and despite being a Man U fan he loved watching Macca take Hughes apart. Really appreciated the ability to do that.

This. Exactly this. Possibly the least technically accomplished out of Parker, Maddix, Fenwick and himself, but he was the beating heart of the side. Took that over from Waddock when he got that injury. Also, in a team that was always rather too nice for its own good, Macca (along with Fenwick previously) was your man when it came to putting gobby wannabes like Vinnie Jones in their place.
Alan mcdonald on 15:09 - Dec 12 with 948 views | Hayesender | He'd have had to give up his 40 a day habit to last in the modern game, but fck me, what an out and out proper defender 👠
