So: here we are plonked in mid-table, extremely unlikely to go down, pretty unlikley to go up. Question is what the dickens happens next season? Wells and to a much lesser extent Hemed have helped us climb away from danger but won't have come cheap and you wouldn't expect either of them to be here next season.

We're out of parachute payments, will have the yearly FFP payment to make and a lot of players out of contract. Rangel could maybe be kept on if he proves his fitness or in a player/coach role, Cameron might not be the most sensible move, Bidwell, Lynch, Pav and Cousins all available on frees and you'd expect one big sale of Freeman or Eze.

In normal circumstances you'd think we'd possibly be set to push on under Steve Mc after the disastrous start to the season but...

now promotion and relegation look realistically unfeasible i would hope that McClaren will start giving the youngsters a bit more game time. You're right though, it's a very worrying prospect, especially in regard to bidwell and lynch - we don't appear to have youngsters in line to replace either at this stage.

Agreed, I think if we fall away from mounting a playoff challenge you would hope that some of the youngsters that we may need to rely on next season will get some game time.

The success of McClaren making a partnership out of Toni and Lynch when we thought all was lost last summer when Nedum and Robinson left gives me some cause for optimism and what we may be able to achieve with a small reshuffle this summer but that's offset by the uncertainty of how much budget we will have and if we will have to sell one of the players that has made things happen this year, similar to Smithies going last summer. I expect our most valuable asset is Luke Freeman.

Really relying on the likes of Oteh and BOS to step up which is hard when they barely play.

Furlong at centre-half please.

Either way with Bidwell, we need another left back as Niko seems to be running out of chances.

Rangel, Cameron, Wells and Hemed will all go. From them, we need replacements in all their positions.

That's 5 players already!

Cousins will move on as will one of Freeman and Eze. If the latter two don't go, Chair will be looking to move on, which would be a shame.

Oteh needs to be given an chance for the rest of this season and step up next season.

Pav deserves another contract, but that would stop BOS and Smyth from breaking through.

Got a feeling Ingram may move on too along with Hall, Baptiste and maybe even Matt Smith.

That would be yet another re-build.

Not easy this, is it?

Can we go out yet?

I don't think it's a given that ALL out of contract players will be released. Think I'm right in saying Ned & he whose name we do not speak at Forest were the last two signed under the old style mental contracts.

I'd imagine someone like Bidwell is on a relatively sensible contract, and both parties may well agree it makes sense to do a new equally sensible one.

A player like Pav is less likely to get a renewal when he has youngsters pushing him for his spot....and yes I know we need to start giving those youngsters game time, but I'd assume once late play off push / late relegation slide are both firmly off the radar, that'll happen.

I think I agree with you.

I get the hunger for blooding our youngsters, but we were so lightweight before the loan signings that my excitement for that is tempered.

I also think when you are adding young players to the team you need to surround them by real talent or experience. For example - The best winger in the world’s assist stats would look awful if he’s firing crosses into Conor Washington. Having Wells in and around the box would give any of our wingers more confidence and makes the whole attack look better.

I don’t think it’s possible to just swap what we’ve got this season with less experienced players. There’s undoubtedly talent in our U23s and subs bench, but I bet we’d still need to get in some experienced old battlers to shore things up by the end of the summer transfer window.

I’d personally still be chasing Play offs with our strongest team each week until it’s genuinely impossible

Holloway did that a couple of seasons ago once we reached 50 points and we nearly went down. Need more points on the board yet before we experiment.

But the club can't feel that way!

It should be, & it may well be, that the club know exactly which players will still be here next season. They should also know which positions they need to replace & have decided who their main targets are.

As things stand, we are looking at some of Kakay, Manning, Smyth, Manning & BOS coming to the fore. Perhaps others may overtake some of these in the pecking order. It is hard to see how we could afford experienced replacements to shore up the squad.

This is why so many questioned the signing of the loan players as a short term measure. What we gained from experience, we have lost from the lack of development of our younger players.

Agreed , relegation needs to be mathematically impossible rather than unlikely before we start selecting for next season ..

The first 4 games the kids were not really playing, was only Eze & Kakay in the side whilst Smyth and Bright got a half each. Rest of the side was not far off what it is now

I think it's a big rebuilding job this summer. a lot of players will be going and not much money to replace them with quality. Reminds me a little of the 99/00 season when we had a decent year around the playoffs for a bit using loan players and then when we couldn't get the same quality of loan the following year we went down.

Still for the rest of this season we shouldn't be mucking about too much, I'd like to see Smyth, Bright and Oteh get a few more games but wouldn't be throwing all the kids in and writing the season off

I was just thinking that after yesterday. That Season, and especially Stuart Wardle, had a feeling of a fluke and a freak around it. This was has promised so much, but is now starting to fade.

We need a period of stability. Get a team together and give them a full season of playing with each other to build for the following season. To build, we simply cannot chop and change constantly.

The problem for us will be up front next season - we only have Smith and Oteh and the cost of anyone claiming to be a striker is ridiculous...

Cup win it is then...

Can we go out yet?

One thing I've been consistently shocked by on here this season is how people have downplayed or seemingly just forgotten the state we were in before the loan signings were made and our form improved. As if the two were unrelated! As if a 7-1 scoreline couldn't have been more emphatic! Make no bones about it, we were goners.

Of course youth development is paramount for us but it's always a fine art balancing the present and the future. Simply put, the platform we develop our kids on - ie a competitive senior side with structure and purpose - is a part of youth development itself; it's about pathways, not roads to nowhere. Would we want to be Crewe or Charlton with excellent youth system conveyor belts building to nothing?

I don't really understand the scaremongering tone of this thread. Our situation is precarious and we knew that very well. With the resources we have available - restricted finances and limited infrastructure - our natural weight is in the bottom rung of the Championship (never mind the ambitious clubs in the League below). We await to see whether FFP levels the field somewhat as promised but in the meantime we crack on and try and repeat this season's trick with the view to replacing parachute payments with player sales. It will be stop-start, frustrating, and some seasons hairier than others - and maybe one year present and future concerns will align where we'll have a consistent, robust side that can take a decent shot at it. It's a difficult trick but it's the only one we've got.

Would rather be in league one with QPR youngsters who are launching their career than mid table in the Champioships subsidising someone's pension, no matter how good they've been.

This is just a ludicrously - even maliciously - extremist position. Every player who isn't a youth product, "no matter how good they've been", is a Bosingwa now?

Well at least behind the scenes we have some good people, the interesting thing is seeing how McLaren sees things going forward, I don't really see him as a "project" man myself.

Who knows what his thinking is these days. Having had a number of well publicised set backs to his managerial career recently maybe he has bought into Hoos & Ferdinand's plan for the next few years and is adjusting his managerial style accordingly. We know he isn't afraid to change things after the early season debacle, and some of the football since then until recently has been scintillating. If we end up 12-16th next year on an even tighter budget then it will be a success AFAIAC.

The grass is always greener.
