New cars 19:04 - Mar 27 with 2309 viewscolinallcars

Announced today that from 2022, all new models will have technology that prevents the car from breaking the speed limit. Blimey, I've had cars that could barely break the speed limit for donkeys years.
I wonder if techy people will be able to hack into the system to make the car go as fast as it's engine will allow ?

Big brother , won’t be long before we all have trackers fitted as standard on cars also.

Going to make Aston, Ferrari, Lambo, Rolls, Bentley all very interesting.....

not sure if its been thought through properly though.......

For instance.....if it is set for a maximum of 70 over here, will it go unrestricted in Germany, or 85 in France etc?

Also if the car is doing all the throttle then its going to be less efficient due to the lack of subtlety the human puts into the operation of the throttle pedal, and how we as humans can judge a run up to a hill rather than a computer that will only open up as the hill takes a toll on the set speed.

Very inefficient and fuel wasting if you ask me.
Mind you, we are but pawns of Europe in all this.... I'd rather we have road carnets for anyone from europe driving over here, and using our roads, and as they are goign to charge us for going into europe, we should be charging them.

Cheers
Dave

As far as I could tell it's linked to the official speed limit wherever you are, based on GPS and reading speed limit signs with built in camera. So yes, will adapt to location.

This is unsafe.

Say you're going 70 on the motorway and all of a sudden a lorry in front of you jackknifes. Luckily you can push the accelerator and momentarily break the speed limits to get around it before it blocks the whole road and you end up as strawberry jam.

Oh, wait no you can't, bad luck your dead.

My satnav works on gps but it doesn’t always show the right speed for the road I’m travelling on.

My cars got a throttle override if i release and then re-stab the pedal quickly, but its very hit or miss.

Its also got lane departure warning, which is very unnerving when the steering actually tries to pull the car back from the white line.

Will they also make keyless cars compulsory, as its just been announced that due to improved technology car thieves are stealing keyless cars every 6 minutes in the UK, going to dig out my old crook lock

They'll already have them as it is going to be based on GPS technology and reading the road signs.

Get an old car that now doesn't need an MOT or road tax, no CC charges and without seatbelts.

Sorted.

The good news is that (a) it'll only be fitted to new cars and (b) you can just override it.

The bad news is that it'll make it easier to read logs on how you might been driving prior to an accident and/or in some cases get linked to insurance - the latter is fine if you want to do it, not if your don't of course.

In reality most of this tech has been around for years and this is just a refinement. My 9 year old Merc already has various cameras, a radar-controlled cruise control, lane departure and so on. It's already permanently tracked by GPS and everything is already logged and could be accessed if, say, accident investigators wanted to have a look at what kind of speed, throttle opening and braking I'd been doing prior to an accident. It's just unlikely as it would be a ball ache currently.

Event data recorders have been on cars and motorcycles for many years now. So whenever there is an accident it takes a snapshot of what the vehicle was doing before the accident. Mind you the authorities have to get a warrant through the courts to get the data if you don't agree to supply it.

In 2016 it was reported that almost 2 million speeding tickets were issued - Assuming all 784,654 of those paying a fine paid the minimum of £100, this would mean an income of £78.5 million for the government.

So they are going to kiss this goodbye along with all the other taxes they lump on us motorists?

And if we all obey the speed limit and have driver less cars that don't crash - where will all the organs that get donated come from?

My problem with this technology is that the more driver aides there are the less responsibility the driver takes. I mainly ride a motorcycle and seem to get on a daily basis the sorry mate I didn't see you scenario of cars pulling out in front of me, changing lanes when I'm beside them etc.
The other problem is security of the technology and the data. We are seeing a rise in the number of cars that can easily be hacked and many keyless cars can be easily stolen with tech that can be bought over the net.
Then we get to the big one. The data. We've seen many missuses and data stolen from various so called 'high tech' companies. Eventually it won't be just authorised sources who will be able to see this data the criminals will find a way too.

The secret of motorcycle visibility is simple, join the Hells Angels. For some reason everyone notices them when they’re riding around.

That's 'cos they've got fookin' loud exhausts on their hogs. They're heard before they're seen.

Modern motorbikes are strangled to within an inch of their life to meet emissions regulations and get good MPG. Problem is they're now so quiet you risk getting knocked off 'cos no one can hear you and people simply don't bother to look. I now have a helmet cam as it happens so often with me.

When I had my ZX6-R, I changed my standard exhaust for a (legal) after-market Remus Revolution pipe and suddenly people were aware I was there, simply because they heard me.

Back to these cars.... being able to switch off the box trickery means people will just leave them off. As others have said, the need to suddenly get out of trouble is vital and in any given situation you have a nano second to react so as there's not enough time to switch it off before flooring it out of trouble, people will simply leave it off.
If something happens that prevents them from being switched off then there's going to be massive legal problems.

"well guv, I smacked into that car 'cos I couldn't accelerate out of trouble like I could in my old Focus. Not my fault then, is it, as had I not had the restriction I wouldn't have had the accident".

Spot on re. the security side of things. If you have a car or device purporting to be "smart," it is vulnerable.

I have an electric car, an i3. I deliberately opted for a non-communicating home charging station so it cannot be remotely disabled - or switched on - and I do not use the i3 app because potentially, my car could be controlled by a thief if they nicked my 'phone (or if I carelessly left it at a bus stop).
