| Julien Stephan - He is doing quite well !!!! 07:41 - Dec 10 with 5314 views | numptydumpty | Its not really been said on here much as yet. But Stephan seems to be getting a lot out of many different players and the whole squad seem more together and all are playing their part. With Marti Cifuentes coming to HQ with his team of supposedly greater quality and depth, it will be interesting to see how that game pans out. Marti was more bristle, whereas it seems Stephan is more laid back and encouraging as a man manager, and when we have not performed, he does highlight this and is keen for players to react. The goal conceded yesterday and we immediately went on the offensive and we believed we could still turn it round. I think you can see a lot of players are now enjoying playing for us and they all are motivated and want to do well and know their roles too. The forum earlier this season, when Christian Nourry was waffling big time, I liked Stephan's response. "He is the boss." To me, it did seem like a tongue in cheek comment, in that he seems to know how to deal with different characters and not just those on the pitch. And a bit of light heartedness can go a long way in football. I think it's time, we gave the manager some kudos. Magnifique, Monsieur !!! C'est tres bien..... [Post edited 10 Dec 7:48]

| Julien Stephan - He is doing quite well !!!! on 09:06 - Dec 10 with 2685 views | SW_Ranger | As they all say it’s a marathon not a sprint but JS is slowly building a team with spirit. We definitely lack in areas but he can only work with what he has. Was good to see youth on the bench too. Shows he’s thinking from all sides of the squad. He certainly deserves praise (if the Marti lovers can let go that is ) | | | |

Yeah, towards the end he was doing that big time. You could see the players were (understandably) getting a bit tired, they were falling back a bit in the high press, they were sitting a little deeper. He was having none of it :-)

Might then have turned a few of the losses into draws.

Interestingly I think the Dembele for Smyth substitute was planned for 60 minutes so at that point Paul goes down physio comes on just at a moment Birmingham were building some rhythm. Result the planned sub is made, their momentum is stopped and 2 minutes taken out the game. Are we learning the dark arts at last? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Looks like that was a genuine injury, Hat. Chair had ice on in the dugout after coming off.

Hopefully another learning from tonight is don't put Morgan on as a part time full back against arguably the oppo's best player (he could have put on Morrison at CB and moved Dunne across to RB). But then we wouldn't have had all that excitement at the end so what do I know...Sacre Bleu!

| Julien Stephan - He is doing quite well !!!! on 10:31 - Dec 10 with 2242 views | Lblock | I’m still not fully on board but that says more about me and my negative nature. He’s learning on the job and I still don’t see what he sees in Dumbele. One thing I thought that was great last night was at the final whistle he had one priority. That was to get hold of Poku and give him a talking to which I think was about being back in the left back area on cover when Brum attacked and scored (that’s my assumption based on where he was pointing and him being fairly animated). He then gave Poku a man hug and sent him on his way. That is great coaching of a young player. I’ll be interested to see if he has any contacts in January that will allow the addition of a really commanding keeper. Can’t argue with being 14 clear of relegation and top 10. I’m still scarred by the “Snake Beale” season so not getting carried away but being in the play off positions after Boxing Day would have me starting to believe. Bon chance Julien | |

Agree. Lots of justified criticism of the club for some own goals over last couple of years, but they’ve got 2 good managerial appointments in their pros column. You don’t need to look very far in this league to see much more expensively assembled squads with very questionable managerial appointments at the moment

I think he's been carrying the can for decisions made by the club which has resulted in some fans judging him a lot harder than Marti. I don't buy this nonsense about understanding the league, he's managed football at a much higher level. IMO it's about understanding the squad. Whatever he's doing it's working, just look at the table and compare how we're playing to last season. Long may it continue! [Post edited 10 Dec 10:59]

| Julien Stephan - He is doing quite well !!!! on 10:55 - Dec 10 with 2027 views | Wegerles_Stairs | My brother says football fans are fickle... I certainly wasn't overly impressed by him standing watching the Norwich game but two home wins later and sitting in a play-off spot, Monsieur Stephan suddenly looks like a far better manager. My main issue with him has been wondering how much is he his own man, which wasn't helped by the Plymouth debacle but we're certainly a much more exciting watch this season (usually) and I agree that it's good how demonstrative he is on the touchline. | | | |

| Julien Stephan - He is doing quite well !!!! on 11:01 - Dec 10 with 2004 views | TK1 | His coaching of the press, where players need to be both out of possession and in is excellent: it's totally flummoxed two bright young English coaches in our last two home games. I am looking forward to the Spires analysis of it because to my untrained eye it looks levels above what we're used to. It's getting better, too. Last night's and the WBA pressing was really top. It's really risky having those full backs backing up the wide players in the press like we do now, but we're getting really good at it. Nearly had another goal from it (do need some work on our own goal kick bits though - or maybe that'll be solved with a new keeper in Jan...) I think he's massively underrated (on this thread). Yes, he has better players than Marti, who I really liked, but JS appears to have drilled this lot to such an impactful degree. They're improving every game, both collectively and individually. We're playing a two man midfield of Madsen and Varane, with two strikers new to this level... It's very impressive work which, much as I liked Marti and Warbs, would've been beyond other recent QPR coaches. And it's ballsy as it definitely isn't the stated game model...shame nobody asked Nourry about that in the meeting. Anyway, I think he's a very good coach who is getting the best out of these particular players. Excellent hire. | | | |

I think it's some of one and some of another. We definitely have a stronger squad this season, but I like how Stephan has adapted to our squad while still playing aggressively. Under Cifuentes (who I liked a lot - I was seething at the way his leaving was handled) I think were either wide open and weak or stodgy and solid. Stephan seems to have squared that circle a little more.
| Julien Stephan - He is doing quite well !!!! on 11:43 - Dec 10 with 1783 views | Hunterhoop | He deserves huge kudos for ditching the failing game model, instilling a more direct and pragmatic style of play, playing 442 (or variations thereof - last night was a very clear 442 with Kone pushed on), and taking control of the playing matters. That put his head above the parapet in a new role in a new country. Ballsy. Like it. Have heard he is very popular with the players, which is great. Like Dave said, I like him and I liked the previous manager. This is a better squad so we should be better than last year, and we are. How much better? Difficult to say. One small note of caution, last night his subs almost cost us 2 points. Putting Morgan on out of position against Gray was a huge risk and Birmingham immediately targeted him and scored a goal from it. He could have shoved the more experienced Dunne out there and put Morrison at centre half. Poku came on and was miles off it out of possession defensively. Those subs really hurt us in the last 10 mins. It was the only time Brum looked lively. Morgan got himself (positionally he messed up for their goal letting Gray run behind him free to then receive the pass and set up the goal) and Stephan out of jail a bit. No harm done though thanks to another arrow from Morgan. That’s two laser like strikes from him this season. | | | |

I've seen the Dunne at RB idea mentioned a few times since the game and I'm not certain about it. While Morgan definitely struggled there, I'm not certain how much better Dunne would've been. Dunne has been great at CB because it has left him less exposed for pace - up against the pace of Gray we might have seen him a little exposed like he was earlier in the season. Mbengue fits better out there because he is both strong and pacey. Morgan is also not the fastest, but I'm not certain it was an awful decision - not sure how many choices Stephan has. I guess we'll never know since it didn't happen. We need an RB in January, as we've been saying for years now.

We've seen Dunne struggle at RB against lesser wingers than Gray so not sure that would've been safer. Poku definitely needed to track Roberts, agreed: I think Stephan was making that point loud and clear at full time to him. Think Poku will be a very important player on the right later in the season, love his directness and that run to the byline creates the goal. All praise of Julien Stephan must be prefaced by "I liked Marti Cifuentes" and so... I liked Marti Cifuentes, and yes we do have a much better squad in forward positions this season. However, we don't have Ronnie Edwards, who was the catalyst for recovery from the disastrous position we were in this time last season. And JS is currently playing Madsen and Varane in a central two, with Dunne and Cook at CB in front of Nardi. All five were there available last season but we would never have risked such a line-up in that formation in key positions. It's down to the coaching and the information he's given them that it's working well, as well as the instructions he's given others in and out of possession. I'd be amazed if JS isn't rapidly rising on the whiteboards of some other higher-placed clubs.
| Julien Stephan - He is doing quite well !!!! on 12:39 - Dec 10 with 1490 views | CiderwithRsie | I really liked Warburton and Marti and thought we were crazy to ditch both. At the time, on paper (and not having anything else to go on) I thought JS looked a better coach than we had any right to expect. The next bit is pure speculation, but I think any coach looking at QPR's history, our finances and fanbase, the squad and the way the club has been run, would see us as a gamble. Lower mid-table in the 2nd tier is about par, relegation (or at least fighting it) more likely than promotion (or challenging for it.) Clearly JS was willing to take the gamble. I think he's played it very canny - keeping his mouth shut when it might have been tempting to shoot it off and win likes on social media; not pissing off the owners, but keeping some distance from them too. Think he's reaping the rewards now. Current league position is enough to keep fans happy, so is the way the side plays (good mix of pragmatism, muscle but decent amounts of skill too.) Think he's made himself some room for manoeuvre with Nourry. Has maybe been lucky not to inherit a financial black hole and need to sell his best players (all too frequent here.) I have to wonder what he thinks about the Furlong/Dev Squad issue - does he see that as part of his turf? Maybe it's just not his priority in his first year, but I feel that eventually any head coach/manager worth his salt is going to want to know that side of the club is functioning in a way that meets his needs. | | | |
