Coventry Reflection 17:25 - Jan 31 with 8044 viewsbluenwhite10

One of the great afternoon HQ after last weeks disappointment.

Great team performance.

Not sure who did not track the runner for the Coventry goal, but in fairness it was a quality ball into the box.

When you consider how many players we have out it really does hit home what a great result it was.

Some really good performances from the back four, Vale and Kone with a great goal, but my man of the match was Madsen today.

The ball in for Kone’s goal was quality and the calmness to his finish was outstanding.

Madsen has come on so much from last season and is a top performer week in week out this season.

Come on you R’s

I’m amazed that refs who know the Championship still give any free kicks when Smyth goes down.

It’s got to the point where he’s on his way down before the full back even gets there. As teams get bigger and stronger it’s noticeable that he struggles to get away from them now and dropping to the floor has become plan A to hang onto the ball. Strikes me he now plays as our most forward defender.

Gives his all and love him for that but where’s the end product?

'As teams get bigger and stronger'. You've surely got wonder why that is. Smaller players get kicked and barged off the pitch and Championship referees let it happen in the name of 'letting the game flow'. Yes, he goes down too easy but as others have said, that was a stonewall penalty and he was also the victim of GBH. Give the guy a break.

A definite stonewall penalty, but I think there's also an element of Smyths decision to constantly look for the foul and throw himself to the floor that will put doubt in the refs mind.

A few minutes before he chucked himself across his man and bought a free kick, which is always his first choice over retaining possession. Eventually if you cry wolf enough the ref won't give the blatant stuff...

Looked at that penalty incident again and the defender definitely raises his arm into his midriff as well as blocking off Smyth path. As was said any other part of the pitch it’s a foul .
The referee was average at best yesterday.

Think that makes Kone 7 for the season (6 league 1 cup)?????

I was sarcastically saying he’d get double figures - but that was shots on target.
Fair play he was superb today.
However I’d still argue his return so far this season is below par. I really loved his physical efforts today, summed up by his “fcuk off, that’s mine” battle with their CB’s one of which ended up with that looped header and a superb save by their keeper.

In all my naysaying I’ve been saying I want him to make me a mug, he’s got the tools but needs to be fitter and shooting more. In his utmost defence I’d agree he’s been too deep and showed today his best work can be done as point man and off balls into the box.

Much love

I think he has two parts to his game

Finishing: Which was evident at Wycombe Wanderers and glimpses with us

Battling/Creating: Which is is evident more so here with us, hence his low goal tally.

If he learns (and remember he is only 23) to combine the 2, we would have a cracking striker but he is learning still. I watched him a lot yesterday, and he is indeed slow, but he always seems to get to where he needs to be - As seen with his goal yesterday because that was a fast break and he was still in pole position to score.

So, agreed, the return from what we expected is low, but still think longer term we will be a force with him him and a fit again Burrell. I do think that when you sign a striker who has scored a hatful of goals the season before, one would rightly expect that to translate to the following season. Just think this is a transitional season. Remember LB, glass half full not half empty

There was a moment in the first half where Walsh played it long to Smyth on the break and he challenged for the header, then sprinted on to challenge for the loose ball and win us a throw deep in their half. That's why he's effective, because he challenges defenders, he chases things down, he puts people under pressure - he also works bloody hard getting up and down the flank to protect his full back btw. Not forgetting the odd goal and assist. You need players like Smyth in your team, that's why he's popular with his teammates and every coach we've had.

Not only was that an absolute stonewall penalty, but the ref let them get away with a few fouls on him. Including the multiple fouls in one down by the corner flag. Then the one where the guy had him in a headlock and Smyth lashed out.

As for Coventry, I haven't seen enough of them to judge but going on yesterday's performance if all they have are long throws and fouls then I hope they blow it.

From my view in W I thought Smyth threw himself to the ground, having seen the replay there is some contact with the knee but I still think it was not a pen, would be given under VAR no doubt but you would be disappointed if that was against us.

Also on Hayden, I thought he was excellent a real key component for the win

JS saying that was the lowest xG for Coventry this season. We have looked really good when out of possession, very good shape and compact, which just makes the Wrexham game all the more frustrating.

Poll: How is Nourry cooking so far ? 🤣

That save from Rushworth in the first half was truly magnificent. Paddy Kenny v Yakubu. Every time I see him he’s their best player and it was always going to take something special to beat him. Badly let down by his defence. Hope Brighton give him a chance and he kicks on as I think he could be a future England keeper.

Thought he was at fault for the winner, pushing Vale’s cross towards the penalty spot for Madsen to finish it 😃

Harsh I think. He won the free kick getting himself in between the ball and defender outside the corner of the box and was reffed to a different standard to the other players after that. Can accept the penalty not being given if the ref judges it as Smyth moving his leg into the defender to make the contact (not sure that was the case but in the moment it looked plausible) but the one at the end of the first half near the corner flag was pathetic refereeing.

Honestly my impression of that was it was just a series of Smyth throwing himself to the ground looking for a free kick, not getting it, then getting up and doing the same again.

I actually like Smyth as a player I think he adds a lot of value, but when your best skill is "winning a free kick" and the ref isnt buying what you're selling, maybe this isn't the game for you

Thing is, Smyth does go down too easily looking for free kicks but he is no different to lots of players across the leagues. Look at the penalty MK Dons were awarded against Grimsby yesterday and at Jack Clarke throwing himself to the floor for Ipswich, trying to get a 2nd penalty against Preston yesterday.

Grimsby MK dons here

Lots of players worse than Smyth.

I get it. It's not "diving" it's "looking for contact". One is outright cheating the other there's technically nothing wrong with it, I think I'm just a bit sad that it's a part of the game now

There is something a bit classy about Vale. He has had some dreadful games. And he isn’t the most athletic, but he can see and execute a pass and he has a great shot on him. I have had a feeling go a while that could be Madsen’s back up, either when Burrell is back or Chair is to a lot into that 10 role.

Was it a traditional 4231 today, or more of a 4411, with Vale off Kone? Be good to know as I couldn’t make it.

With Charlton and Blackburn up next, there is genuine potential for 6 points, which would put us on the cusp of the play offs before our tough run in begins. But that gives us something to play for and changes the dynamics of those tougher games.

Others may disagree but I thought it was the same 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 that we've played most of the season. Vale just did that second striker role a lot better as he can drop into midfield more comfortably.

Smyth is our worst offender at throwing himself to the floor. Sometimes i think he does it because he feels he does not have the skills to beat his man or put in a decent cross.

Wish he attempted to beat his man more or attempt more at the killer ball than throw himself to the floor.

He has a reputation which extends beyond W12, but not just to opposition teams but very much more known to those officiating who are more wise to what Smith does and in fact, i think consequently, as a result he actually often doesnt get the correct decision, when he is genuinely fouled. Lots of work on the training ground required for me.

Smyth's effectiveness has decreased since he's been needed on the left. He's not good enough to cut inside at this level despite doing so well for LO. So it just becomes a culdesac. On the right he can get past his man on the outside.

It did very much feel like the ref had taken against him yesterday, though. Going to ground so frequently, and those couple of off the ball elbows over the last couple years will make officials less sympathetic.
