Albums of the Year 10:49 - Dec 1 with 5271 viewsBrianMcCarthy

A decent year, I think. Some contenders...

More of the same from The War on Drugs on 'A Deeper Understanding', but the same is great.

Bonobo's 'Migration' is as good as anything he's done.

Superb melodies and sound on Big Thief's 'Capacity'.

Cigarettes After Sex's eponymous album is a bit same-ish, but lots of quality.

Bad Parents' EP is a little blinder. Can only find a live video which doesn't quite do it justice.

Grandaddy are back in a huge way with 'Last Place'.

Quiet Hollers' 'Amen Breaks' is overflowing with choons.

The Shins carry on the genius on 'Heartworms'

The xx's 'I See You' is a real breakthrough. Grown-up now. Beautiful stuff.

The Tin Can And The Flood by Davesnewbike.
The Rise And Fall Of A Northern Dubstar by Intastella (ft Jah Wobble)
Brutalism by Idles.

I think drugs may have been consumed.

Brian , I saw Cigarrettes After Sex in London last year. Your comments are valid. As great as the album is 'samey' is being polite. Standing still for over an hour with hardly any beat to even tap your toes to was agonising. He has a superb voice but they need to mix it up a bit with slow/fast numbers instead of 10bpm for literally every song.

Yes, two tracks with a bit of tempo and/or variety and that would have been a class album.

I believe both Dignitas and Exit International have pre-ordered multiple copies.

Quite enjoying The Falls new facts emerge, his best work in a long time, possibly his last. Mark E Smith is very unwell and cancelled two gigs this week, and when he does perform live now, he does so from a wheel chair.

The newest Queens Of The Stone Age album "Villains" was bloody brilliant - well worth a listen if you get the chance.

Do you mean Mike Scott of Waterboys fame? I can't work out the association between him and DNB!

I'm enjoying the new one by Quicksand. Interiors it is called.

Can't think what else has been released this year. I've been listening to loads though.

Sleaford Mods - English Tapas. Possibly their strongest work to date

Baxter Dury - Prince of Tears. Not quite as humorous as his late old man, but just as satirical. Nice effort.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

Always a fruitful thread. I'll throw in these two. Alvvays are playing the Roundhouse in March which should be great, and I saw PSB in Hammersmith last month - probably the highlight of the whole thing was the size and enthusiasm of the crowd compared to when I'd seen them in New York.

Cobby & Litten 'Boothferry'
(yes they're from Hull)

Steve Cobby of Fila Brasilia fame, with fellow Hullite & raconteur Russ Litten

A great mix of electronica and spoken word - not a wasted beat or lyric...and who can resist a track title like '(Not Another) Urban Mystic'?

Can't find anything on You Tube...but if you like John Cooper Clarke and Sleaford Mods, well worth tracking down

Peter Perrett. Great comeback album - unexpectedly and delightfully alive and kicking.

Had this come out as the fourth Only Ones album in the early 80s it would've got a resounding thumbs up - and as the OO's sound is pretty timeless, and it's all about PP's songwriting craft, that's no bad thing

Two nice tracks, Bklyn. Will check out the albums.

More than welcome. I didn't realise Big Thief had a new album out. Their lead guitarist is worth the price of admission on his own!

I can't say that I've been inspired to seek out too much new stuff this year. I did see Moonlandingz at Glastonbury and they were interesting, as is their album.

I'm with you Brian. The War On Drugs can do little wrong.

Also got Everything Everything's A Fever Dream

Mr Perret's been getting a bit of airplay on Radio 6 lately especially on Marc Riley's show. Pretty good it is too.

Both DNB albums sound like early Waterboys material
