..in Kentish Town chatter recently - was in this evening with one of my girls, still a lovely pub but six paaahhnds ten a pint, unless you had a ticket for the lesbian icon singing next door. Anyway, ‘decamped’ up to the Bull & Last.

Two nice boozers, but you should have got to the Pineapple or Southampton; two great pubs.

Was just coming on here to recommend the Pineapple. Used to go in there when my Thursday football was in Kentish Town and loved it.

One of my mates lived a few doors along from there years ago, so I was often in there. Lovely back street boozer and I was saying to my wife the other night how much I miss accidental all-dayers in NW5. Front bar of the Pineapple is great - always used to take overseas visitors in there for the quintessential London pub experience.

The Bull n Gate..... ah the memories.

Shame Lynskey gave up running it.
The best little old raves I ever DJ’d at in that gaff. Absolutely pucker evenings.

The mere mention has inspired me to visit another thread....

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Know ‘em all, the very tolerant Mrs Boston endured many a night in these establishments. Her fault though, lived on Grove Terrace.

Two-and-a-half years away from London and I've now become the bloke from Barnsley who walks away shaking his head after being charged almost £17 for a glass of wine and a pint. I was home the other week and paying £6.00-50 for pints that would cost me £4.50-90 max in Bristol. With the rent/mortgage and beer prices, I'm not sure I could cope if I was a young person starting out.

The Bull and gate has been ruined.
Shiny restaurant with shiny people giving me odd looks when I was watching f'kin doom bands in the same spot long before they set foot in the place.

My mate had some food before Epica at the forum.. cheap 'tis not. I had waitress service whiskey.

On a side note I used to know a barmaid there so we all used to rock up and sit at the end of the bar getting hammered.

Even the weatherspoons on the Bush Green has latched on. They used to do a plate of food and a pint for less than £6. About 6 months ago it changed and is not available after 5pm in the week. Mind you two Derby fans recently were creaming their pants on discovering 2 pints of Abbots Ale for less than a fiver.

Cocktails are the way forward.

I have no problem with people drinking cocktails sat round a pool on holiday, on a hen do in Miami or in wan ky hotel bars, but anyone asking for a cocktail in my pub, would get barred and stuck on pub watch or whatever it's called. Time-consuming show-offs.

The espresso martini is a hell of an invention though and if you have to wait five minutes for half a lager while the guy works out how to use the coffee machine then I don’t apologise.

We've been here before chaps: if you want a cocktail, go to a wan ky bar - leave the pubs for people who want to drink drinks that don't take 3 hours to prepare. Same goes for coffee and tea drinkers - I don't go to tea rooms looking for a pint, so stop drinking hot drinks in pubs. Simple.

I take the point and was joking but would guess the margin on cocktails and generally anything a bit fancy is higher and could be the difference between the pub being there at all or not.

Pubs.

They are alcohol imbibing establishments. There to set you sailing on a sea of intoxication, the crashing waves of oblivion leading to the sinking dread of doom. They are boozers.

Restaurants.

Places to eat food. That you later flush out into the Thames. NOT PUBS.

Clear difference. Somehow it seems people have managed to conflate the two into some hideous, soul destroying namby pamby Frankenstein's monster.

You wouldn't go to a prostitute expecting a thesis on Carl Jung would ya?

People are moaning that the price of bitter, lager and real ales is going up to £2.70 a pint in my local club in Enfield.

I know you’re joking, mate, but this is a very serious matter. I have wasted days waiting for some knob or other to knock-up cocktails in pubs. Life is short. Next time you’re in a pub and you fancy a cocktail, ask yourself these questions: Am I at South Beach, Miami, wearing Roller blades, a crop-top and hot pants? Am I on a Hen-do in Cardiff? Am I James Bond in the sort of casino that doesn’t lay-on free sandwiches and sausage rolls?

If the answer to all of those questions is no, then please, please, please just ask for a normal pub drink. Your co-operation is appreciated.

Aperol Spritzers are OK Konk, as it's Aperol, Prosseco, soda and ice. Just a long drink really and it looks nice. Don't take too long to put together.

Edit: - Forgot the fruit.

Mrs R from Afar recently stayed at an historic hotel by the Thames, near Windsor. It was bed and breakfast plus we had a really nice evening meal, preceded by a pre-dinner drinkie in the bar.

On the Sunday, we were checking out when I noticed a "service charge" for the pre-dinner drinks, 10% as I recall. This was suspicious as we had actually stood at the bar to order the drinks and had taken them with us, from the counter, to our table, the wild-eyed radicals that we are. So, net net, we had paid over a quid for the barman to complete the arduous, nay, hazardous schlep from the optics to the counter. Honestly (seethe, fume )

Cocktails? In a pub?

This ain’t some Lefte poxy Banke, bohemian shangri-laddida Gunner Graham.

Go in, buy a proper sodding pint, maybe some pork scratchings, sit down and drink you gits.

Gawd help us all.
