Here's the rules.

1. You get a singer, guitarist, bassist and drummer.
2. Don't be a bellend and pick a whole band that already exists. They have to be from separate bands.
3. Singer is based on their voice and not their ability to play bass/guitar etc. If you pick Geddy Lee for bass, he doesn't get to be singer.
4. They can be dead.

For me it's;

SINGER: Layne Staley (Alice in Chains)
GUITAR: Geordie (Killing Joke)
BASS: Jamie Stewart (The Cult)
DRUMS: Budgie (Siouxsie and the Banshees)

This is hard one, could have had Simone Simons for Floor easily.

I think this would rock though.

Singer: Floor Jansen
Guitar: Sonia Anubis
Bass: Cliff Burton
Drums: Hellhammer

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime. (Mark Twain) Find me on twitter @derbyhoop

Keyboards: Steve Nieve (from Elvis Costello's Attractions / Imposters)

Bass: Mikal Cronin (from Ty Segall's band, also a solo artist in his own right)
He is also a really good sax player.

Drums: Valentina Magaletti (been in loads of bands, e.g. Vanishing Twin)

Lead guitar: David Tattersall (The Wave Pictures)

Rhythm guitar: Frank Black (Pixies)

If I had to choose living people, then I would've gone for k.d. lang & Kevin Rowland (Dexys) on vocals.

But seeing as we're allowed to choose those no longer with us, I would like Sinead O'Connor and Otis Redding.

Terry Edwards (The Higsons /Tindersticks/ PJ Harvey etc) as as utility player (various brass / woodwind instruments / keyboards, he can play pretty much anything)

and The Big Man Clarence Clemons on sax too please.

It would basically just be The National, so The National. Maybe get Brooooooce on vocals, or Lucy Dacus for a change of pitch

Would go to watch these perform:

Lead - James Brown
Guitar - Prince (although a one man band in himself)
Bass - Louis Johnson
Drums - Stewart Copeland

If I could extend:
Keys - Stevie Wonder (again multi instrumentalist)
Percussion - Shelia E.

That's an incredible contrast. Soft wishy washy Prog Rock/Indy musicians with the loudest mofo in the history or Drumming thrown in for good measure.

Most of these line-ups would sound horrific playing together!

So trying to think of people who might actually be relatively sympathetic, I'll try …

Ronald Isley - singer
Charlie Watts - drums
Phil Lynott - bass
Malcolm Young - guitar

SINGER: George Michael
GUITAR: Gary Moore
BASS: Bernard Edwards
DRUMS: Paul Ferguson

I'm not sure it would come together very well though.

Suffering since 1978.

A very thought-provoking thread!

I'd go with:
Lead guitar (and also synths): Ed Wynne of Ozric Tentacles
Rhythm guitar: Steve Chandra Savale of Asian Dub Foundation
Bass: Les Claypool of Primus
Drums: Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree
Keyboards: Vincent Crane (RIP) of Atomic Rooster
Flutes: Nathan Flutebox Lee of Asian Dub Foundation
Vocals: Chris Cornell (RIP) of Soundgarden

I think they'd invent a new genre!

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Which brings up another problem for people like me - I love music, it's my favourite art form, but I'm a really bad musician. Dreadful. I've tried. I can tell you who I enjoy, I can tell you who makes my ears swan, my eyes spark, my heart do the double bass drum-kick in 'Be my Baby', but I genuinely, genuinely have no idea who the best musicians are. As a non-musician, I'm just guessing.
