Had a similar experience with our cat Stan, was not a purebred but was part Norwegian forest cat. The fact he followed us around everywhere and always wanted to sleep on us meant it was a big loss last year when he died suddenly, only 8. Left such a big hole in our household we got a kitten called Rodney.
To Hubbles point, we also have bird feeders in the garden and it's surprising what birds we get and the pecking order of who gets priority, we've got woodpeckers which are always good to see and seem to be in charge. |

Yeah I just heard that too. I don't think this has happened before but we did used to keep chickens and we used to have to take down the feeders to stop encouraging wild birds near our flock but that was through the winter not spring/summer. |  | | |

Best wishes worst day of anyones lives , losing my black lab kasper valentines day covid year still kills me now, followed me everywhere u name it , docile and dopey , but put a cooked burger in the same postcode as him and it was gone wthin a sec , his record at a bbq weas four fully cooked Burgers and all the add ons kethcup bun bacon tommato as an ex rescue and being a lab his i want food part of his brain was always on overdrive. he had a fart which could clear a room in under 5 secs , always denied it was him though until he slowly turnd back to smell his backside, of the dogs ive had he was the boy that ill always miss
it does get easier eventually but the silance is the hardest thing to get used and any one whos ever owned a lab always know silence means hes doing somethig. he shoudlnt do usually eating |
Ahhhh mate. Thanks for sharing this. A lot rings true in what you've said.
Max never barked (less than 10 times I ever heard and it was a big bark if he ever did) he didn't jump, didn't run off, didn't dig and chewed only the toys he knew were his.
He did however like to recycle his own waste from time to time..... And boy did he love his food. I'd find him under my feet most of the time I was cooking in the kitchen.
He was the definition of Stoic. Took everything in his stride and was such a peaceful boy. Like I said an extension of me.
Like you said Wombat, he followed me everywhere just so he could spent as much time with me as possible and I loved him for that. I know I was his everything and he was for me also. He witnessed me and my partner bring 2 kids into our family and he was the best at letting them climb all over him and playing the big brother role.
His favourite place was the beach and when we get his ashes back they will be scattered over his favourite beach spot.
And you are absolutely spot on about the silence aspect. It's so weird and sad when you hear and feel it.
Words can't describe how I feel. It's as low as loosing a human family member for the role he played within it. He was my boy, my best friend. 💔 | |

I'm not sure exactly what people are referring to but it could be trichomonosis, a disease which has been killing large numbers of garden birds, mainly greenfinches and chaffinches. I'm a keen ornithologist and am sad to say I haven't seen or heard a greenfinch for years.
Here's some info from the RSPB, they recommend that bird feeders are not made available to our feathered friends in the warmer months. I do recall reading somewhere that feeders can be cleaned such that all risk to the birds is avoided:
