We got an Australian Labradoodle in Feb. Called her Stevie. She's a good girl.
Certainly hard work, but looking forward to her being a bit calmer and not thinking every human needs to be licked to death and said hello to.

I 'inherited' a 12 year old miniature schnauzer about six months ago. My mother-in-law has dementia and had started feeding the dog wrong things. This culminated in eggs and bacon which gave her pancreatitis and nearly killed her. We had to take the dog from her which was heartbreaking tbh. With the disease she couldn't grasp why we were doing it and was really nasty to us. We realised it was because of the disease but nevertheless it was a traumatic time.
Fast forward to now and my Mother--in-law is now in a nursing home which she loves. She is like a different person. We are also able to take Jazz to visit her which is great. She parades around the home, showing the other residents her dog. It is lovely to see.
However, although we would never give her away and we love her to bits, it really has reinforced why we never had one of our own! They really are a commitment!
Planning breaks or holidays or even going to work some weeks involves extra planning to make sure she is looked after or not left for long. Luckily I am able to bring her to work if needed (and she has become the 'therapy dog' here!) Add the 7am walks, the 10pm late wees (the dog not me) and I have moved from having a high-maintenance mother-in-law to a high-maintenance dog!
So for me dogs are wonderful loyal pets but a bit of a tie. |
Takes me back to the three weeks of intense negotiations about 17 years ago before our first black lab came to change our lives forever.
I was dead set against it citing the commitment and removal of flexability in my life..... back then I could do as I pleased and head off anywhere at the drop of a hat. We had our cat but he looked after himself by and large. The missus batted everything back and in the end the negotiations went full on Trump when she said "well the dog is coming this Sunday and that's the end of it".... unlike Trump she actually meant it and it was the thickest of red lines.
Fast forward six months later and that dog was mine... not the wifes, and for the next 14 years the dog was 100% my best mate and the most positive impact on my life ever. I'd never really holidayed in the UK much but my eyes were massively opened and any other logistic challenge was got over pretty easily really.
I still miss that dog like nothing I've ever missed before and I'm so thankful we became a mutli dog house 9 years back as I cannot imagine a home without a K9 presence yet the pain of loosing one would make the choice to get another "in isolation" immensely hard for me.
As we've discussed before though CCJ.... absolute props and fair play to you for everything you've done in this situation; both dog and wider stuff. It's proper tough. |  |

We've got a massive Norwegian Forest cat here we rehomed when he was around 6 - he's getting on a bit now but would frequently catch squirrels up until a few years ago - brought 3 into the house alive which wasn't ideal and 'left' them for us.
Great cat though, more like a dog, wants to be on or around people a lot of the time and climbs on you and falls asleep - equivalent of a lapdog, though you couldn't really train him.
Had a family cat and dog growing up - both brilliant, cat lived to 18,
Would love a dog now, but currently a no from my better half sadly! | |

I am more than happy with the birds in my garden. Zero maintenance! And I love watching them and listening to them sing, particularly now in spring when they are in full voice. The variety here is incredible; I have woodpeckers, nuthatches, chaffinches, goldfinches, wrens, sparrows, robins, blue, great and coal tits, blackbirds, thrushes, starlings, wood pigeons, wagtails, dunnocks, magpies, crows and chiffchaffs, as well as a pheasant who pops by occasionally.... Kites and buzzards overhead...
I do like dogs, but I wasn't put on this earth to walk behind them clearing up their shit! Cats... meh, they kill too many birds and other creatures. |  |

Growing up, we always had boxer dogs, and they were just lovely - mental, but lovely.
As a grown up, with a family, we have a miniature Dachshund, again, just such a little character. She sleeps on my desk, next to my laptop during the day and loves sleeping on Mrs Monkey's lap in the evening. |  | | |

Good stuff, glad your garden attracts such a variety of different birds. Our old garden used to play host to most of the same species, with the occasional special treat, like goldcrests, blackcaps, redwings and - just the once each - redpolls and waxwings.

We are - hopefully - moving to a new house soon and I will be managing the back garden for wildlife, like with our old house. The birds and insects will be our pets, sort of. I created a pond at the old place but for some reason, it was never very popular with frogs and toads. By chance, the new house already has a pond, saving me cost and hours of work, and during our viewing, three toads were very visible in said pond. Yay! 
I do like cats but my wife prefers dogs, so we've agreed not to have any pets. A friend adopted a feral cat - a massive creature - which used to hang around her garden. For an animal which had been used to living off its wits, it was amazingly docile and affectionate. Toby was probably the most placid cat I've ever come across.
The only pet my family has ever had is a goldfish which I won at a fete. Poor old Plop didn't last long, sadly. The first time he leapt out of his bowl, my dad found him and rescued him. The second time - sigh - we were too late  . |  |

Do the cats and dogs all get on? I’m assuming Oscar is nice and relaxed. Goats are ace, but they all have the same eyes.

I replenished our bird feeders yesterday, I also purchased and installed two more new bird boxes.
Across the road from me there Is a small wooded area that has been there since the Romans were here, there was plenty of bird wildlife there, our development Is small (70 houses) but when we first moved In there were no birds In the garden, there certainly Is now It's taken a while to get them back but they're back now.
Above one of our bedroom windows every now and then you get woken In the early hours by an owl sat In the gutter, first thing the next morning there'll be a small pile of bones from a mouse or vole or whatever. |  |

Had a similar experience with our cat Stan, was not a purebred but was part Norwegian forest cat. The fact he followed us around everywhere and always wanted to sleep on us meant it was a big loss last year when he died suddenly, only 8. Left such a big hole in our household we got a kitten called Rodney.
To Hubbles point, we also have bird feeders in the garden and it's surprising what birds we get and the pecking order of who gets priority, we've got woodpeckers which are always good to see and seem to be in charge. |  | | |

All I can say right now in the still immense pain that I'm feeling is that I was so lucky to of been blessed by his presence. He ended up being an extension of me and I was so lucky to of lived alongside him.

Some of the dogs are good with cats but others will kill them, so dogs are all in house and use the rear garden, while cats are all outside in the front garden, there are multiple dog style kennels dotted around the front garden and in the winter we leave the guest toilet window open so they can go in and out.
Oscar has his own field next to the rear garden, we used to have another one called William Eric (Bill E Goat} but sadly he died.
Oscar is very gentle and wouldn't hurt you for the world but unfortunately he has very long horns and just a shake of the head could cause serious injury so you have to be aware.
He is all white and weighs somewhere around 75 kilos according to the vet and when he stands on his back legs to destroy the Yuka trees he is over 7 feet tall, he's a big lad and we love him.
He is quite a clever goat and by using his mouth can unlock his gate by sliding the bolt across. | | | |

Best wishes worst day of anyones lives , losing my black lab kasper valentines day covid year still kills me now, followed me everywhere u name it , docile and dopey , but put a cooked burger in the same postcode as him and it was gone wthin a sec , his record at a bbq weas four fully cooked Burgers and all the add ons kethcup bun bacon tommato as an ex rescue and being a lab his i want food part of his brain was always on overdrive. he had a fart which could clear a room in under 5 secs , always denied it was him though until he slowly turnd back to smell his backside, of the dogs ive had he was the boy that ill always miss
it does get easier eventually but the silance is the hardest thing to get used and any one whos ever owned a lab always know silence means hes doing somethig. he shoudlnt do usually eating | |
