I said my father was the ref, not me.
However, according to him referees are instructed to use their own jurisdiction to blow at an appropriate point when time is up . Thats why , for example , if a penalty is awarded and full time is up, they don’t just blow the whistle to end the game , they allow the penalty to be taken .
They will allow corners to be taken and once headed clear or away from goal , then they blow for full time .
We saw 40 or so years ago a ref blow for full time when someone took a corner and the ball ended up in the net. It’s a famous clip .
And was widely regarded as terrible refereeing.
It’s called common sense .
Caveat to this though …my old man was a bloody awful ref 😀 |
There's clear logic in allowing a penalty to be taken as it's a credit/debit for something that's already happened.
Less of an argument for a ball that's gone out of play.
If time's up, time's up. The notion a ref can just decide to ignore the laws because someone might score in a second is completely absurd as it's giving an unfair advantage.
There are numerous reasons we lost this game 3-0, the ref blowing the full time whistle isn't one of them. |  |

Man and boy I’ve played and watched football and I’ve never seen, at any level, a ref do that (blow the whistle while a team were about to shoot). Irrelevant in the grand scheme of things and would have made no difference to the result but still a strange and twåttish thing to do. |  | | |

The game you're referring to was the Brazil v Sweden first round match at the 1978 WC finals in Argentina.
And the ref was our very own Clive Thomas.

Thomas allows the corner to be taken then immediately blows the whistle as the ball has been kicked and is in mid air. He disallowed the subsequent goal, the match finished 1-1, and he was never given another WC finals match.
I was never a fan of Thomas. I always thought he was too much of an attention seeker to be a top referee, but many liked him and his style and backed him here. I seem to remember Brian Clough had plenty to say about CT being right.
I wonder what Thomas would have done if it had been an Argentina corner!? [Post edited 3 May 14:01]
